A PLAYER : My conclusion concerning all this: these recordings were not the mostconvincing. A top-end CD player brought something that even the remasterershad not been able to bring to the SACD version. On a good hi-fi system, Istill preferred my Arcam player. It could still transcend a poor recording. The SACD player will do a job as good as the recording is. On BeggarsBanquet and Let It Bleed, the Sony player was the clear winner. I guess itdoesn't take advantage of the SACD playing as well as the Arcam takes careof the CD playing but even with that, the late period recordings werebeginning to be very good and the CD process brought them limits missingfrom the high definition SACD.I didn't do so much of a job for the Dylan remasters but to my ear, theysound all better in SACD. The recordings were in better shape and weretreated with better care, using new mixes (with less tape hiss) if needed.Abkco, the company owning the rights to the Rolling Stones early recordings, chose to play it cheap. The SACD stuff was added because Sony certainlyoffered them a big check if they could brag about the first major cataloggoing SACD. The Dylan reissues are an honest deal concerning high definitionremastering. SACD truly brings anything to them. And the possibility tolisten to Blood On The Tracks in a good surround mix is a real bonus.

A PLAYER : I have a slight problem with my Rega Planet 2000 CD player. When I play mymusic at loud volumes it will cause the CD player to skip or hang up.Reduce the volume and it's will track properly again. I've seen a couple ofother post from other 2000 owners complain of the same problem. Before Igot mine I told one guy to use Isopucks, however, the feet on the Rega arealready rubber and look to be about like Iso's.My unit sits on a wooden shelf of a cabinet and right next to one of myspeakers. Moving to another location is not an option, and unfortunately anew cabinet is not an option either. My wife would have no place to put hercrap if we didn't have the big entertainment center, grrrr! Anyone havesome suggestions on how I might isolate the player from these vibrations toalleviate this problem.BTW, I've owned a Adcom GCD-575 for years and the thing never skipped orhung up once in the exact same location?

A PLAYER : One cheap way is to try a partly-inflated , small-diameter bicycle innertube under the player.I have that with mine now and it still skips at loud volumes. Of coursethe tube rests on the bottom of the chasis, not on the feet. That wouldrequire a much larger tube, if they make one that size.I presumr the feet do not contact the shelf -- that is, the player is fullysuspended on the tube? (and free from contacts with the side or back walls)You might try varying the inflation of the tube -- dont' inflate it fully. Other have suggested interpolating a dense material (like a stone slab) between the tube and the player. The feet are not in contact with anything. The 2000 was really badbefore I placed it on the partly inflated innertube. Any bump in theroom amde it skip. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Also, for you other Planet owners,I contacted Rega and her's what they had to say in case your interested:

A PLAYER : Top loading players are a little more sensitive than draw players to bassfrequency.Wood shelves are the worst isolation material available, a spiked glassshelf is recommended.Regarding positioning a minimum distance of 2.5 m from the speakers isrequired.2.5m from the speakers is a pretty good distance and I doubt I'll be able toget that kind of separation. Seems to me that this is a bit excessive. Iwould have thought the player would have been designed to withstand thesekind of vibrations. If top loading players are this prone to vibrations Ihave to wonder if it's really that great of an ide?Anyhow, I will do my best to isolate it and see how things turn out.Unfortuantley, it hangs up at listening levels that I listen to on a fairlyregular basis. On Wed, 04 Dec 2002 01:51:11 GMT, "Jack Dotson" wrote:A number of well-designed top loaders show no more sensitivity tovibrations than fron loading ones. Rega's exercice in futility withtheir silly loading mechanism are to blame here.Such glass shelves are highly resonant and doesn't show any isolatingproperties, acoustically wise.

A PLAYER : Steven Sullivan wrote in message ...Hello,I`ve been using Rega planet 2000 for about 1.5years, butintermittently I got a real bad problem (actually the first oneoccured after 3 month use) of a whining noise (not from speakers), CDskipping and muddy sound(from speakers) when playing certain CDs. Those rubbing sound and CD skipping goes away, if I hold the top downwith my finger. Of course, those CDs work OK on other CDPs(pioneer,PC cd-rom..I have) and also copied CDs(of problem CD) works perfect onthat rega player. I got a few of Decca CDs Opera CD (made in Germany/digitally remastered in `80)having this sort of problems.I found that the symptom looks much like the problem of old Sonyoptical pickups; The noise comes from the laser assembly resonating as CD spins.() and().The reason why this happens on certain CDs and tracks(usually theproblem is not easily repeated) might be that CD's speed of rotationand a little lighter weight disc may trigger the problem.
