CAR CD PLAYER : More technically speaking, the angle of the light's reflection from the diskmedia to the laser optics really falter with a disk that is opaque (hard forlight to penetrate through). In the the opaque media (A CD-RW), the light doesnot penetrate all of the way through. Therefore, the detector thinks that thelaser hit the mirrored surface of the CD. The detector has to compensate somuch for this offset and error in focus or tracking that the disk may spin andnot read at all, or just not read, because the detector is trying to applycorrection to focus and tracking that is already correct. In CD-R's with atranslucent dye, the data is rendered more readable and the optics provide foreither little or no correction from the detection circuitry. Thereforetranslucent CD-R's are far more reflective than CD-RW's which are opaque (havemuch darker dyes in them).Subject: Re: how to adapt a car CD-Player for reading CD-RW?From: "Ralph Wade Phillips" Date: 10/16/01 9:51 PM ESTMessage-id: CAR CD PLAYER : Aiwa CDC-X175MAiwa's Best CD Player In '98Features-High Power 40W x 4-Stylish Illuminated Remote Controller Included-Multi Color Display w/ Demo Mode-DSSA (driver's sound stage adjustment)-Dual Color Illumination (amber, green)-2 RCA Preouts-Front Input Jack-3 Level H-BASS-Digital Tuner-18 FM / 6 AM Presets-Auto Radio Turn On Timer-CD Changer Control-16 Bit Dual D/A Converter-Mute Button (for drive-thrus, some audio is still heard)-Flip Down, Detachable Face Plate-Face Plate Carrying Case-Theft Deterrent LED LightIf you're looking for a cd player that will thump HARD evenwithout an amp thenthis play is great for you! Pretty much if your speakers can take it thiscan push it.The reason I'm selling this is because I wrecked my car so i really have nouse for the cdplayer anymore. I installed the deck into my friend's car and it worksperfectly still. The only thing about it is that there is one cosmetic flaw, but it isn'tvery bad at all. ThePower, SEL, +, - buttons have a slight brush burn on them. If desired youcould evenfix it by just retouching the black coating that was rubbed off. I sentthe unit to getserviced just to make sure nothing was wrong with and they did a check onit andsent it back saying they cleaned all the controls, contacts, and switchingand did acomplete circuit alignment & performance test on it and it passed. Theunit is still coveredunder its manufacturer's warranty just in case something were to happen. Thisplayer retailed for about $400 so I'm asking 250 or best offer. The problem is,when inserting a cd, it starts to spin, but stops again, this keepsgoing on for about 3 times. Then the cd is being ejected and thecd-player shuts down. I forgot to mention this is my first (car-)cdplayer repair. I tested the 'spinmotor' it runs normally, noobstructions or other weird things. The motor that positions the laserruns also fine. My question is of course: what is the problem?? Should the laserhead move to a predefined place somewhere on the cd('cause it doesn't do that, it doesn't move at all) ? I cleaned the lensby the way. What could be the reason the 'spin-motor' stops ? Currenttoo high ? Which parts break down first in a (car) cd-player ?Thanks for reading, more for answeringHi RuudWhen a CD is inserted into the drive the focus servo looks for a CD andthen the spindle motor starts.(usual sequence) In your case the CD will be `seen` but the TOC (table ofcontent) not found. Reasons:Poor laser-power, faulty tracking servo, spindle motor does not reach thecorrect speed. First lookfor bad solder joints. Relubricate the spindle motor; use only one drop ofoil made for sinter-metalbearings. You need experience to repair CD-player due to closedcontrol-loops,reading Sam Goldwasser`s Repair FAQ may help to understand the basics.Be careful, a laser diode is easily damaged. Do not turn an alignmentcontrol unitl you know what youare doing(what it does control)Hope this helpsPeter DG7BAM CAR CD PLAYER : From: ()Subject: Re: car cd-player not spinning Newsgroups: Date: 1999/07/27 See the CD repair FAQ for basic information, then get back to us.--- sam | Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ Home Page: Repair | Main Table of Contents: +Lasers | Sam's Laser FAQ: | Mirror Site Info: I got a broken pioneer car-cd player from a friend with the instructions: fix it! Thanks for reading, more for answering CAR CD PLAYER : Thanks for the offered solutions/info.Peter, thanks for your reaction..it really helped me startedSam, i read your page, and i regret i didn't find it earlier, it'sreally great!Unfortunately i didn't find a real solution of the problem (but lot's ofother, helpful, info). Maybe i should be a little more precise: afterinserting a cd, the spindlemotor starts to run for about 2 seconds, thenstops again, starts again, and so on, for about 3 times, then the cd isbeing ejected again. Now after reading the 'Sam pages' and thinking itover a little, my guess is that the optical pickup can't get a focus onthe cd (although i cleaned it carefully). The lens is moving freely, andthe coils that move the lens are ok (measured them). The'cd-engine-controller' gives the cd (or lens) a chance 3 times, thengives up and ejects. Like i said before the optical pickup doesn't move at all. Manually move the pickup away from the center of the disc and power it upwith a disc in place. The first thing it does should be to reset to thecenter. If this doesn't happen (probably even before focus), check thesled motor, track lubrication, etc. If it doesn't get to the center, itcan't read the table of contents.
