DISC PLAYER : For general CD player (not specifically laser disc but a lot in commone)information, see:New, expanded, updated, and improved general repair notesfor a variety of electronic equipment are available at:along with a whole lot of other interesting stuff maintainedcourtesy of Filip (I'll buy a vowel) Gieszczykiewicz.I also have an ASCII version of the entire set of articles forwhich I am the author. These are available via email (zipped, uuencoded). The total size is about 1.6 MB uncompressed. From: ()Subject: Re: Missing DIGITAL mode on a laster disc player Newsgroups: Date: 1996/04/30 Sam Goldwasser wrote:Yes I do have a digital scope (20MHz). Is it good enough to do theeye pattern test. I have read the repair note for CD player & the pickupalignment. But I guess I am not sure what to test first. Can you giveme a hand? I am not sure where in the circuit borad to test the eye pattern. Also when the laser disc is loaded, it will block out all the circuit board, but I guess I can solder some wires from the circuit to the scope. Is thisa correct way of do it? DISC PLAYER : The story is as following:The fuse of my laser disc player gone 4 years ago. I guess because myplayer is a very old machine, there is no way you can take out thelaser disc or replace the fuse while the laser disc is loaded. SinceI have to return the rental disc, I have unassemble the mechanicalpart which holding the disc. I knew this might affect the alignmentof the pickup, so I have been very careful when I unassemble it.I had tried to avoid touching the pickup at all, but I guess I amunlucky. After I replace the fuse, the player will not able toplay anything. What is will able to do are:1) Identify if that is CD or laser disc loaded.2) pick up is moving up/down in/out to try to read the directoryBut it cannot decode the directory information correct. After the play button is pressed, the pick up will try for 5secand than stop. This is why I put it in my basement for 3 year. One day I saw theweb page on pickup alignment, I took it out and started re-alignment. DISC PLAYER : Yes, a 20 MHz bandwidth (even if this were sampling rate it would be goodenough) is fine. There should be something labelled 'RF', 'raw data' or something like that.It will probably be generally near the cable input that connects the pickupto the main board(s).Probably, but keep them short as possible and use a 10X probe. As I always recommend, if a rental tape gets stuck in a VCR or (in this unusualcase) a disc in a CD or laserdisc player, let the store know what is up - theydon't want their expensive tape or disc ruined any more than you want to messup your machine.I think I recall you posting about this a while ago :-) or else it wassomeone with a similar model!OK, for now, see if you can locate any test points. What you are tryingto do is obtain a clear, stable, eye pattern as described in the FAQ.Very slight adjustments of the optical alignment may have significant effectso go slow, back and forth, while playing a disc that at least will notabort. DISC PLAYER : Does anyone have any opinions about getting a laser disc/CD player combo? Or is it better to get two separate units? From: ()Subject: Re: Laser disc player or combo? Newsgroups: , Date: 1995-02-06 16:01:13 PST Since all Laser Disc player will play music CDs, I'd say buythe LD player first. If you don't like listening to CDs on it, then buya separate CD player. If you -must- have a CD changer, then buy separate.I have an entry level Sony MDP (Multi-Disc Player, I think the model is 555)which will play all different sizes of disc. I think you are awared thatthey now made few different types of disc player; MDP, LD & CD only but youget a 5 disc CD changer and the latest MDP with do CD-i too.It seem like a better deal to go with a LD player since the price is prettyreasonable now and you can watch LD! In theory, the heavy mechanism forLD should provide better transport mechanism for CD which is smaller insize. As a result, it seem like a good way to use LD player as transport.EAD and Theta also use this concept. DISC PLAYER : Sound? I compared my Sony MDP with my 5 years old first generation Denon5 disc changer and my Denon beat the Sony! The low end is more tight andthere are more bass, everythings are more focus and accurate! In theorythe disc changer complex mechanism should degarde the sound and the MDPheavy mechanism should enhance the sound, but my disc changer is thefirst generation which might have more metal parts than the latest costimproved version, so its transport part might not be that bad. So theDAC might be the cause! Now the question is how about the top model LD player? I heard thatusing top-of-the-line LD player with out-board DAC does create very goodsound. But remember the fiber cable in theory is better than coax cable,in real life the coax sound better than the fiber most of the time whenyou use the fiber or coax as digital cable with the fiber terminationusing TOSLINK which is majority of LD players using now. Unless you want to buy a Theta or EAD using AT&T termination which is currentlybeing consider as the best sounding termination method.
