DIVX PLAYER : fine)- Possibly a CD writer too, for the reasons stated below.)- Dolby 5.1 output card and Dolby speakers would be useful :-))- TV-out card is a definite necessity)- Probably a *totally* custom-written DivX player (possibly based on a favourite DivX player currently available) because of the extra possibilities and limitations of the project**** Right, so why the large hard drive? ****Well, as you know, a DivX file is anything between around 500MB to1.3GB per film...My idea would be for you to be given the opportunityto store the files from the CDs on the hard drive for easy viewinglater on without having to find the original (?!?!?!?!) CDs.You could also rent a DVD and rip the files to your hard drive quicklyand easily (although you'd have to use a prog like DVD Decrypter torip it) and have the DVD back in the shop within half an hour andstill get to watch it...or maybe encode it to DivX...which is why youmight decide on a CD writer too, although personally I'd suggest anetwork cable and network your computer and the "DivX player" togetherwhich would also allow for other possibilities also

DIVX PLAYER : **** What will this project entail? ****Well, it'd definitely need some custom software written for the*perfect* setup...There's a lot that could be done and I've got awhole load of things that I think would make the whole thingworthwhile...and I'm sure I'm missing tons of possibilities thatothers are going to suggest.**** What will/should it support? ****Of course, not all of these are *definite* possibilities, they're justideas that would be interesting (like the JPG one at the end) ;-)- DVDs (plus MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4)+ DivX (duh ;-))- MP3s, WMA audio and other audio filetypes. It should also play these through WinAmp and output graphics on-screen in time with the music with WinAmp plugins...the plugin should be choosable through the menu system I spoke about :-)- Audio CD...possibly in the same way as above...possibly also being ripped to the HD first (you choose via the menu whether you want to rip or just play or ask each time a new CD is insterted)+ VCDs and all the derivatives of VCD (like SVCD, XVCD, etc)- RealMedia (RM) files (useful for making cartoon collection CDs, for instance)- MOV files (well, it'd be a nice touch)- ASF files (ditto, and ASF would be good if the processor was fast enough to handle it)- JPGs and GIFs (playing them in slideshows)- Any other formats?

DIVX PLAYER : - Another possibility is for it to be able to play games via your TV and a cordless keyboard/mouse but this is not part of *this* project in my opinion and is just an idea ;-) Actually, I'd love to play Serious Sam 2 on my monitor through it so, sod it, it's a part of *my* version of the project and I just won't tell you lot ;-)Now I don't have the programming knowledge or ability to carry thisout, but I *do* have the creative thought needed to make it look good.I also have DivX knowledge and the technical knowledge needed todesign the *hardware* behind it all. Basically all that is neededsoftware-wise is a small bit more than the current DivX playersprovide with a lot more removed from the program than added :-)There's a whole load more I want to suggest (as is my usual wont :-))but I won't waste ideas at the moment, not until I'm *sure* about themenough and feel they'd work :-)Oh, one final note, at an estimate the total cost for hardware for theperfect system is close to £1000 but it could also be done with aslittle as £200 if you use secondhand parts as well and reduce thefeatures a little (no 5.1 audio, smaller hard drive, slower CPU etc.)

DIVX PLAYER : You don't buy DIVX discs. You buy the right to watch them for alimited time.I rent from Netflix. I pay a little over $4 a disc, includingshipping. I spend no gas at all. I just walk to my mailbox, a trip Imake at least once a day anyway. And I get to watch the movie as muchas I want for at least a week. And best of all, I never, ever, ever, have to step foot inside Circuit City. But you're not *BUYING* a DIVX disc for $4.50! You're buying a 48 hourVIEWING PERIOD. So you are, in fact, renting. You cannot compare this kind oftransaction to buying an open DVD, which you OWN and can watch as many timesas you like without incurring additional charges.-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your OwnI am a regular reader of the news group and I own a divx player. My wife had asked what I would like for Christmas and I told her a DVDplayer and listed the feature I wanted. I specifically said I did notwant a divx player and sent her to bestbuys. Needless to say shetried to buy what I wanted from bestbuys and she said the service wasterriable and she could not find anybody that seemed interested inselling her anything. She then went to Circuit City and the scumsales people sold her a RCA Divx player. On christmas morning I waspresented with the divx player and I felt there is no way I was goingto hurt her feelings, consequently I was seething in anger at the slimat circuit city, but I kept the player. Folks, this is how I feelabout my wife. We got the five disks and since then I have only usedit as a DVD player.

DIVX PLAYER : I wrote a letter to circuit city but todate I have not gotton ananswer. I only hope they end this divx nightmare soon, so others arenot conned into making a bad choice. I really feel they took advantageof my wife for their own profit and hopefully karma will catch up withthem. Please no flames as we each have to make our own decisions. In thelong run of all the trials and tribulations of life, this divxinfected player is very low on my list of whats important in amarriage and life in general. I know I could of secretly returned itbut I still choose to use it as a DVD only player. One question - do you have the player plugged into the phone line ?Interesting thought, this. I wonder how many of the players bought arebeing used for DIVX and have active accounts, and how many are used asnormal DVD players...No, I do not have it hooked up to a phone line. I did try to play oneof the free disks, recently and it would not play it. The player saidthat I had to connect it to a phone line because I had unpluged itafter the initail registration back in december. I decided it was notworth it so just trashed the divx disk.
