DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE : mplayer is command line based has a few less features but it is very robustwith the css stuff.Search at freshmeat.net.I don't know about realy new deb packeges so I recommend to try out theCVS Version of both tools.-- Oh Mann, AOL Wochen in der SuSE-ML, wird wohl langsam Zeit die Mail im Footer zu nutzen ;) und Waldemar Brodkorb in suse-linux nach dem 2. I have a DVD drive that someone gave me when I upgraded theircomputer, and I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to install it in mysystem. I have a Pentium II, 266 MHz, with 128 MB of RAM. Is thissufficient to play DVDs using a software player?-- Harry Henry GebelWest Dover Hundred, DelawareGPG encrypted email gladly accepted. DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE : I've read that something like a Matrox G400, which I have, orbetter will do okay.On Mon, Oct 15, 2001 at 01:06:16PM -0400, Hall Stevenson wrote:I have a ATI 3D Rage II+ (Mach 64 chip, PCI card). With a PIII 700, unstable's vlc, and Xv output, Istill drop more frames in some scenes than I should. (Sometime I'llget around to trying out different players and making sure allrelevant optimization is enabled, which is not the case for Debianbuilds (of vlc at least) so it will work on most machines.) The usual choices are xine (xine.sourceforge.net) and videolan(). Videolan hash built-in support for scrambled DVDs,while xine requires a 3rd-party binary plugin.

DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE : I use PowerDVD on both my Radeon equipped machines (matter of fact Iprobably have the same LG DVD drive you do. I wouldn't say cheap, inexpensive is better. That drive is great and was easily flashable to ALLregion), but didnt your machine come with any driver disks for the videocard? If it did it should have an ATI DVD player on it (if all you willwatch is DVD's from only one region this should be fine). I However HIGHLYrecommend PowerDVD for several reasons 1) With a program called DVD genie, you can easily switch regions (even on XP) and not be confined to oneregion's selection (yes region one may have the most selection, but thatdoesn't mean they have the best), you will however need to also "flash"upgrade the ROM in the DVD player but if you have the same LG drive as I doit should be easy. 2) PowerDVD has a lot of "nice" features NOT found inATI's player (the best one IMHO is the dual subtitling option)."Mika" wrote in message...

DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE : Your Radeon should have come with ATI DVD player which as faras user inferace and features goes, sucks pretty hard. But ituses Ravisent's Cinemaster filters which are very, very good interms of quality and quite readily use the hardware accelerationbuilt into you video card. That may work well enough for you, but if you like to tweak andmess around, I *highly* recommend Zoom Player:It's essentially a drop in front end for DVD and Media (AVI, MPG,etc.) that can replace ATI's player (and Windows Media Player forthat matter). It's has many, many, many more features than anyof the commercially available players. My favorite is itsbookmarking feature so you can set a bookmark at the beginning of amovie and have it autoload upon insertion of a disc. The movie willthe play without any menu interaction or forced trailers and ZPwill remember your audio and language selections as well.

DVD PLAYER SOFTWARE : Other players are starting to get this feature (ATI's latest hasit I think), but none work as well as ZP's. Plus ZP is activelydeveloped by a hobbyist who is very open to suggestions and isconstantly improving his software.I highly recommend it. If you have and install ATI's player, youshould be able to install Zoom Player and it will use the samedecoding filters ATI's player does right out of the box. You getthe same quality with an enhanced user interface. And it onlygets better from there if you want to play around with it.The latest available version of ATI's player (7.6 I think) is availablefrom ATI's web site. You need the serial number of your driver CD andI think the physical disc as well to install the update. I don't thinkyou have to install the one on the CD first, you just have to have thedisc to prove you bought their hardware. I think the installer mightalso check to make sure you have an ATI video card installed.
