MD PLAYER : What are the things an mp3 player can do that a MD player can'tOr vice versa.Do any of you know which mp3 player has an optical in or line in, so you canrecord from CD players and stuff? That is a good question for a minidisc group. I wonder what you will hear?On Tue, 21 May 2002 13:55:21 GMT, "Sea Maria" wrote:That would depend on the manufacturer. Example: I have a SamsungDigimax35 Mp3 (digital camera/mp3 combination) it sucks. You can hearthe processor regardless of the bitrate of the mp3. (and the 640x480images are weak also.Counter Example: I have a Sony DSC-S50 camera and a Sony MDplayer/recorder. I have exactly nothing bad to say about them.An mp3 player can play digital recordings from non-rotating media, aslong as the information is pre-processed by some kind of computer. An MD player can play digital recordings from rotating media as longas the information is pre-processed by another MD device (usually thesame device used to play... most MD "players" also record). An mp3 player can read from costly (ratio of stored music to cost ofmedia) non-rotating media. (yes, I know about the microdrives anddevices such as the iPod... which I like very much and would own oneof if there was Microsponge support)A MD unit can read from (and in most cases, write to) very inexpencivemedia and produce results equal to the best mp3 players (with respectto sound quality). To the best of my understanding, there are very few portable MP3devices that can record live audio directly to non-rotating media. To the best of my understanding, most MD units can record (bothcompressed and non-compressed) audio directly from any source withenough peak voltage (usually 1.5 Volts)

Then Istarted to read some customer reviews of units that I had already readgood things about....It seems that no one out there really makes a good mp3 player for thePC. The iPod seems like it would be good, but the hassle of using Macmounting software isn't worth it for me. All the other ones havemajor durability issues. Since I wanted this for inline skating, durability was definitely a factor...although it seems there aredurability problems even when the players aren't used in harshenvironments.I was more or less ready to give up and buy another big, bulky CDplayer, when I thought of checking out the MD players. Sony now hasNetMD which lets you tranfer music via USB...I was sold. I am not 100% happy with my minidisc player because the OpenMGsoftware that lets you use NetMD is GARBAGE, but other than that I amhappy. I have no complaints about the player itself, just thesoftware. I highly recommend Minidisc as an alternative to mp3players...

MD PLAYER : --------------- endus.com ---------------endus at endus dot comIt all remains the sameThey live with aimless brainsThe name has changed but no pain no gain sustains - VirtuosoMinidisc, minidisc, minidisc!! I was considering buying an MP3 player butdidn't want to have to re-upload a selection of songs every time I want achange. I put off buying a minidisc player because they transfered to slowand I was content using my walkman for that as I already had a bunch of tapeto use. But with NetMD, that problem went away and now I am very happy withmy minidisc player and cheap minidiscs.the choice was simple, for me. i wanted a format that makes the player lightand resistant over extreme condition. MP3 cd player are too bulky and slowto seek a song, ic card player sound good but since i travel a bit, i liketoo carry as much of my preferred music as possible, so ic cards are toexpensive for that job. Current mp3 hardrive player are essentially bulky, exeption for the apple ipod, but i don't want to bother with a firewire cardand macdrive mounting issues on pc, and of course i doubt about thedurability of the hardrive, especially in the conditions i will use it.finally netmd was the one that fit my need, i have a lot of md that i don'tuse that much since copying mp3 to md was not very reliable in realtimemode, and netmd was the piece of hardware to pull out of the dust myminidisc blanks collection and reuse them.as a result, i've bought a mz-n1, i'm pleased with it and (knock on wood)i've never had any issue with openmg.
