MEDIA PLAYER CODEC : In the past I have had excellent experiences getting help from this group sothank you.I recently downloaded a video that is the .avi format. In the past I havehad this problem but just pushed it aside figuring I would fix it later. When I play the video it will not play and I get an error message saying ithas to install the correct codec. The status bar shows it trying to connectto the network for the appropiate codec. Then I get a pop up asking if Iwant to install or not, and I click yes. It still wont play the videothough. After trying again (and restarting) it still does not work. I thengot this error message:-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ---------------The appropriate codec is not installed on your computerError ID = 0x80040200, Remedy ID = 0x00000000To play most streaming media, you must decompress the compressed data beforeplaying it. The file that decompresses the information is known as a codec. If the codec is not available on your computer, Windows Media Playerattempts to download and install it. MEDIA PLAYER CODEC : This error indicates that the required codec was not downloaded. This couldbe because you do not have the appropriate browser or your browser'sInternet security settings are too high and will not allow you to downloadthe codec. Make sure that you have at least Internet Explorer version 4.0 orlater installed on your computer. To install the latest version of Internet Explorer on your computer, visitthe Internet Explorer download page on the Microsoft Web site. If you areable to upgrade your browser, try playing the file or stream again, thisshould force your computer to download the appropriate codec and you shouldbe able to view or hear the streaming media.Note Internet Explorer does not have to be set as your default browser todownload the codec or for the Windows Media Player to function properly.------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----------------I am running IE 6, my security settings are set to mediumI am running Windows Media Player 7.01.00.3055Also, Windows ME MEDIA PLAYER CODEC : My Media Player plays just about everything except .mov files. I just bought a digital camera that also does short videos - so I needQuicktime to play them.Does a codec exist so that I don't need to use Quicktime? It is not possible to play *.mov players on Windows Media Player. There is no codec available as of 5 seconds ago :-(If you have Windows XPGo to C:\program files\windows media playerDouble click mplayer2 (this is media player 6.4 included with XP install)Drag and drop your MOV file to it and it will play.If you upgraded media player from 6.4 up to 8.0 it will also playMOV files via file\open or drag and drop.Media player 9 (on my box) also will play MOV files via file\open.I think to get 9 to play MOV files you must have continued the upgradefrom earlier versions. You can still get earleir versions of Media player from the Microsoft siteif you need one to play MOV files. MEDIA PLAYER CODEC : I used to be able to play mp43 avi files but since I downloaded thelatest Media Player, I can't anymore. The program looks for a decoder but can't find one that will play thevid.I am having the exact same problem Viper. I have tried everything inthe Microsoft help site, including putting the driver information inthe system.ini file as suggested by Microsoft. It didn't help.I have tried uninstalling Media Player 6.4, and installing an olderversion, and then the player does not function at all.First things first. Remember, if ain't broke, don't fix it! I saythis because everyone who has updated to the 6.4 Windows Media Playerare having problems with the newer codec. I'm using an older versionof the Windows Media Player (6.00.02.0902), have only added the newcodecs and am able to play everything that comes down the pike. Now, since you've already updated to WMP 6.4, here is some help. Goto: MEDIA PLAYER CODEC : I use the latest version of the Windows Media Player for IE4 (6.00.02.0902),but when playing the trailer from The Phantom Menace (StarWars episode1) itcan't find the right codec. Having searched myself -I think I know whichcodec I miss- I installed the codec, but that hasn't solved the problem...The trailer is a .mov file.During play the Media Player searches the internet automatically -aMicrosoft site- but reports "unable to download appropriate decompressor(error=80040200)".The site address is , but when I try to manually getthere I get redirected to the MS homepage...Who can help me?Does somebody have all the codecs that exist for .mov files? Thanks,From: ()Subject: Re: media player codec ??? Newsgroups: Date: 1999/03/30 The MS media Player updates only include cut down versions of the needed codecs for Real Audio/Mpeg 1 Layer 3(Mp3s)and Quicktime movie files. You will need to install the complete programs if you wish full media coverage, links here, MultimediaAlso the MS Media player updates are invasive and take over file associations which can then prevent the recording of wav files etc and or other programs from using their codecs.I am in the process of updating my Multimedia page to account for this. The best option is not to install the MS media player updates or un-install it and use the correct software to play the media file types unless you need it for something that they do not cover. You may also once un-installing the Media player Updates that windows reverts to the one supplied with the O/S as it makes a backup of this unless you state otherwise on the update install. You may still have to un-install and re-install the windows sound recorder to get it's default play options back and or manually reset the file types actions to get system functionality back.HTH* Hello,> > I use the latest version of the Windows Media Player for IE4 (6.00.02.0902),> but when playing the trailer from The Phantom Menace (StarWars episode1) > it> can't find the right codec.
