MEDIA PLAYER DOWNLOADS : Real Video behaves differently. It seems to download the movie entirelybefore starting. So, it takes a lot longer that QuickTime to start, not tomention that the screen is black all this time, instead of showing the firstmovie frame. When it does start, it plays until near the end, and thenstops to re-buffer, which tells me that my first impression was wrong : itdoes not download the whole movie before starting. But what is taking solong ??? Is this a Cleaner setting I have to change ?As for Microsoft's Media format, this is the worst. It starts out with theWindows Media logo animation, then starts playing about 1 second, thenstops, plays a few seconds again, then stops again, then plays, and so onuntil the end. I guess my question here is : does Microsoft's ActiveXplayer handle progressive download "a la Quicktime" ?Neither Real or WiMP "officially" support progressive download. It'sthere and it kinda works as you have found out but it's something both areweaning users off of. The .wmv/.wma format is strictly a streaming format- the older .asf is a lot easier to work with in terms of progressive d/l.

MEDIA PLAYER DOWNLOADS : If you ask Real or WiMP about prog d/l they'll tell you they don't supportit.Only QT allows for true progressive download in a manner that we wouldexpect.--Eric Bin - - "The internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it's a complete substitute for life."- Andrew BrownAnd why exactly would anyone "want" progresive download? I get annoyed everytime I am forced to watch a Quicktime movie ( progressive download) insteadof allowed to instantly watch a WMV----Windows Media Video ( v8). If youcan achieve the required quality in a stream, its much better to be able tosee this with a 3 second delay, than to be forced to wait 90 seconds ( whereyou may lose 80 percent of a consumer base which was attampting to watch thevideo---the public will normally not want to sit in fron of the screenwaiting like this. If the requisite quality can not be met with thetargeted consumer's stream connection speed, then a traditional download isin order---so the public can click here, and then walk away, coming back 5minutes or an hour later. Windows Media videos are better for this as well, particularly if your video an an "economic vale"----if it does, the downloadcan be wrapped in DRM, allowing you to collect money from each and everyperson who ever gets a copy of this video---or if you perfer, give it outfreely, but require each recipient to give you their name, address ande-mail ( or about 10 other significant rule scenarios). Once downloaded, thevideos will play from the hard drive and be as perfect as you are capable ofmaking them. My company does DRM for the music industry, and we are doing this forvideos now as well. Imagine Napster style distribution, but where everyrecipient has to pay for the content!!! The system works with incentiveplans to help consumers "want" to forward to friends and family. Thistechnology DOES require you to use WMV or WMA files, which to me gives you asystem which eclipses the others.Regards,Dan VolkerV-Networker Technologies

MEDIA PLAYER DOWNLOADS : Are you sure you are not one of the " I can't do it so it must not beimportant" types ? If you are embracing Quicktime, you are missing out onthe potential of the Internet to become a true "media" like television. If you are an "Artist", and have no cares about who sees or buys your work, then by all means, enjoy Quicktime ;-)Unlike TV, this internet based medium allows an individual with good contentto get the content, all over the "medium".Let's say this again John...If "you" are capable of creating "good content",the Internet is an "ideal" medium to distribute your work all over theplanet. Whining about the sorry state of TV programming just underscores thefact that on Broadcast Television, content distribution has been in thehands of very few people, while on the Internet, content distribution is in"Your Own Hands".As you choose to use technologies like Quicktime over technologies likeWindows Media Video, you are essentially "LIMITING" the content choices ofthe public, by purposely choosing a format with poor distribution relativeto windows, and with undesirable charicterisitics relative to the public's"need" for immediate gratification.

MEDIA PLAYER DOWNLOADS : John the tools are here, but you are ignoring them. If the Internet was tobecome a "vast wasteland", you would need to shoulder some of thisresponsibility for your refusal to distribute worthwhile content to it. Andthe fact the WMV technology allows you to do this, and that it drives"distribution potential" with financial return to good content providers,is one more big reason to conquer your aversion to Gatesian Economics.Avoiding Windows Media Technologies because you hate Bill Gates, is about assensible as avoiding College because you don't like what your parents didfor a living, and you don't want to finance your own future with what youfeel is "ill gotten gain".The reality is, you need to take your best shot, and then make the bestworld you can, with the tools that you have.Right now, you are ignoring your best shot.If I was an Internet based "Content Provider" ( like a TV based Networkprogrammer, but the Internet equivalent) , I could only "dream about" mycompetitors relying on people with your attitude, providing them withcontent. You and those like you would make me rich !

MEDIA PLAYER DOWNLOADS : Streaming video should be nothing like TV. If I want to experience TVI'll go turn on my TV where I can get a 27" TV that provides me with fullcolour, full motion video.Streaming video is another form of communication. You have a mouse andkeyboard why don't you put it to use? Web video should be interactive -the web is interactive. Can WiMP do something like the Emmaboda experience (www.barsark.com)? No.Can WiMP do something like Asian Heritage Month ( No.Can WiMP do something like this QT/Flash player( No.--Eric Bin - - "The internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it's a complete substitute for life."- Andrew BrownEric,Somehow you missed this, but Napster "proved" that huges masses of peoplelike the idea of pulling both pure music or music video content off theInternet. This phenomenon helps create an environment where large numbers of consumersenjoy streams at DSL speeds. Real TV type material, but niche based contentyou would never find on TV. It could be a Blues or Jazz concert, or itcould be serious coverage of the World's biggest Bicycle race, the Tour deFrance ( instead of the piss poor coverage the American Networks werewilling to give it). Niche based content is a big part of the future ofInternet Video. Windows media Technology will handle this far better thanthe esosteric and poorly distributed formats you embrace so devoutly.
