MEDIA PLAYERS : Microsoft Media Player is in its third beta on the Mac, and stillhas major issues.If the point of the media Player wars was to produce the suckiest playerfor the opposite platform to convince people to switch I think MS hasdefinately won. Media player for the mac has "issues" and that's lettingit off really easily.I seriously hate the video playback market right now. Especially becauseof MS Media Player. It does the worst things of any player but for somereasons wintel Advocates and plain wintel users have trouble seeing whatthis software does. I really hope that after allthe testimony of the trialsomething is done about how MS as fucked up the video playback market.That said all three players in the streaming video wars deserve a specialplace in hell for how they've treated customers: GUIDS, from more than onecamp!), nag-ware, charging for what used to be free, sabotagingeachother's product, arguing over extentions, not allowing playback ofpropritary codecs, spreading misinformation, and of course not reallysupporting product. MEDIA PLAYERS : I think Quicktime has the most flexibility and well thought out API(including 64bit addressing within quicktime), however I am very over themedia player games. Don't worry. Win2000 for PCs is on Beta 9994949 and still sucks just asbad as any version that came before it. No matter what M$ tries to improve,it's still Windows.You mean the totally stable, very fast Win2000 RC2 I use is equal to thefirst beta?Forced? Anyone can download QT, right? Most CHOOSE not to. As forinferior, QT is the one plagued by the screwy interface and audiotracks that drift over a 10 minute span.Real and MS player aree often bundled so that the user has to choose touninstall them. For an Opt in choice QT is doing pretty well.Now I'm sorry you can't troubleshoot you PC and figure out what is wrongwith the audio, but I suppose that's just a small problem compared to tehproblems it normally gives you. Anyway I think the audio intigration inquicktime is really great and it beats the life out of MS media and AVIwhere there is no API for audio sync at all! The saddest thing I thng I'veever seen is that Be Inc. chose AVI as their multimeda video standard andthey can't keep aduio in sync for clips that are 30 seconds long! Watchthose Be emploiees drop the dead PC monitors off there building (the clipis on the BeOS 4.5 CD) they don't evenm hit the ground when you hear thesmashing sound! MEDIA PLAYERS : After I posted my question (unanswered) about why my Matrox RainbowRunner files have all the interlacing messed up along with screenflashes, I have come to the conclusion that it is that bloody MicrosoftMedia Player 6 that is messing up the playback. If I play the renderedfile from the scratch pad in MS it is fine. But Media Player causes allsorts of hiccups in playback. Only VERY occasionally does it playbackfiles without a hitch. I never had a problem with the old Ani Player orwhatever it was called before Media Player was released. Media Player 7is a hundred times worse (although I know it is a beta) it doesn't likeMJPEG files for output with Rainbow Runner one bit. It will play them,just. But more often than not it will hang the machine once I havefinished watching and try to close the program down.So, is there any simple reliable media players out there that will allowplayback using the Rainbow Runner hardware for relevant files, and thatdoes not come with the baggage of internet intergration blah blah blahthat fills my hard drive with crap?
