MINI DISC PLAYER : --Oh yea, I have a Harley, I love to ride it, but it's not black.Sandy BS #1162000 FLHTCUISupport Eddie Kieger III at I've seen a couple of guys use portables on ultra's but the always hadtrouble with the vibration. One guy took a small nylon sack with a drawstring and hung the player on the handlebars. Kept the cd from skipping.I was all set to give up a saddlebag and install a CD changer when thesalesman at Fry's showed me a Mini-Disc player. I'd seen them advertised foryears, but never really checked one out. Well, it turned out to be just theticket. You can record Mini-Discs with the player so you don't need to buyanother home unit, and they are far easier to record than cassettes. TheMini-Discs are 1/3 the size of a CD and hold just as much (74 minutes). Thedisc itself is housed in a little plastic case much like a floppy so there'slittle risk of scratching them unlike CDs. They can be re-recorded infinitetimes with zero loss of sound quality unlike cassettes. The player iscompact, has features like a home CD player, and is much harder to make skipthan a portable CD player. I put some Velcro strips on the middle of my tankdash (FLHTCI) and some on the back of the player, and it stays put. When Iget where I'm going I just yank it off and throw it into a little bag in theTour Pak. Best of all, since the Mini-Discs are so much smaller than CDs orcassettes I can keep several in my windshield bag and change discs while I'mriding. Try that with a CD! I thought about using an MP3 player, but theyonly hold about an hours worth of music and have to be hooked up to acomputer to download to them which makes them unsuitable for travel.Mini-Discs cost about $2.00 each and one brand is as good as another, unlikecassettes. I have a home DVD player with optical output that hooks right upto the Mini-Disc player so recordings are transferred direct with firstgeneration quality. I can also hook my portable CD player to it and recordthat way. The unit I got has a synchro start mode that means all I have todo is program the playback unit, hit the record button on the Mini-Discplayer and walk away. The unit automatically sets the recording volume, starts and pauses between songs, and stops when the music stops. I can thenswitch the source CD and just hit play to start right where I left off.Deleting tracks is simple and the disc space is reclaimed without the linearproblems related to tape. The whole Mini-Disc player/recorder is about3.5"x3.5"x1.5" thick and I can use it when riding my mountain bike or outfor a walk. Two AA batteries provide enough power for about 15 hours of useand it can use rechargeable LioN batteries, as well. It also has a mic inputso I can use it as a voice recorder for memos, speeches or whatnot. It takesa little more effort to record the discs, but not having to lug around bulkyCDs and risk damaging them is an easy compromise IMHO. Later... MINI DISC PLAYER : Remove NOSPAM to replyMy opinions are my own. I paid good money for them.Visit my website at: I'll second what Rick wrote. I've been using minidiscs (at home and incar) for almost a year now, and it's a great format, both for audiofidelity and for creating your own customized minidisc recordings. The sound quality is about as close as you can get to "original CDquality" - FAR better than cassette tapes. There's no "flutter" likeyou'll get with cassettes, and since the format is magneto-optical, thesound quality doesn't "degrade" as the discs are used over time (unlikecassettes, which seem to wear down after repeated usage). I haven't integrated MD into the bike yet (Road Glide), althoughthat's one of the reasons I moved to the format. I tried a Sharp "301"portable player in one of the FLTR's "glove compartments", but foundthere is just enough vibration in them to throw the tracking off (the301 player has 10-second skip protection). I've ordered one of the Hopnel "Add-a-System" tank bags and will trymounting the MD player there, as the tank seems to get less vibration ona touring bike than anything mounted "up front". I would suggest that if anyone considers the minidisc format, a goodway to go would be to buy a small portable player (for bike, car, etc.)and use that in combination with a "deck" at home. I picked up a Sharp"bookshelf" system on Ebay for just over $200 that has 3 CD trays andthe MD recorder. You can load up 3 CD's, and mix selections in any orderto the MD. Also, SONY and Sharp now have "hi-speed" CD-to-MD dubbingrecorders - the SONY can record to MD at 4x speed. I've had good experiences with SONY, TDK, and Denon discs, but hadproblems with Memorex blanks for some reason. For anyone interest in MD, the best place to start is the "MinidiscCommunity Page" at MINI DISC PLAYER : John, thanks for the excellent reference source. Too bad I found I paidabout $40 more than I should have for my Sharp MT15H, but the site has a lotof other useful info. Later...Remove NOSPAM to replyMy opinions are my own. I paid good money for them.Visit my website at:Yea I started thinking about an MD player last night. The problemat the moment though is I already have a portable CD and with leavingon Friday morning I wouldn't have time to record many MDs. With theCD player I have about 1100 CDs which my favorite ones I have copiedto CD-R so I can leave the originals at home, plus I've burned a lotof MP3s to CD , so right now the CD player is my best option. I justneed to figure out a way to carry it. The MD player may be in my futurethough. Thanks for the reply.--Oh yea, I have a Harley, I love to ride it, but it's not black.Sandy BS #1162000 FLHTCUISupport Eddie Kieger III at I've had the best results with this as far as skipping goes. Slip itinside the coat and then run the wire out the bottom. Keep the wirejust a taste longer than you need it, too long and it creates havocblowing in the wind. You might even try running it under the dash.
