MINIDISC PLAYER : New CD-RW discs are less than $20. How much are minidiscs? Do you have a minidisc drive that you can hook to your computer?_______________________________ ________________________________________ To join the 1997-1998 hockey boxscore and/or statistic mailing lists,go to or send a blank message with nosubject to orFrom: ()Subject: Re: YES I HAVE A MINIDISC PLAYER Newsgroups: Date: 1998/01/14 This Christmas my kids wanted to get new portable CD players sincetheir old ones were about shot. So I thought about a MiniDisc playeras an alternative and wound up buying two MiniDisc players and theMiniDisk recording deck. After having it for not quite a month (during which time I haverecorded over twenty 74-minuite minidiscs from CDs and used it on two12 hour car trips), my evaluation is that MiniDisc's are fantastic. Icannot understand why they haven't taken off yet. These things areabsoluetly great. On a portable MiniDisc player versus a portable CDplayer you can't tell any difference in sound quality. Yet theMiniDisc has numerous advantages over a portable CD player. My homestereo is a relatively high-end system (about $3,500 for the Denonreceiver and the speakers) and the sound difference is neglible. MINIDISC PLAYER : yes, but what do you remember HEARING? The difference in quality is notnoticible to 99% of listeners, unless you start recording from md to md tomd...Did you rememebr to go *hear* one? It's compressed lossily, but I've heardone and have no sonic problems with it.I'm buying MD to play in my car (there's a MD deck/player bundle for $500at Best Buy). DAT ain't gonna do that, esp. for that low price.Just a note, you can get that bundle for under $350 from . Ibought my Dolby Digital receiver from them. Not one problem. To be honest, I was looking around for a returned-from-Xmas price on that.I know its off the DSS subject, but I have to agree on the MiniDisc posts.I picked up the first portable Sony MiniDisc player while in Hong Kong in1993. Its little heavy, but it works great. I've heard many people complain(mostly those that haven't used them) that the chopping of the highs andlows makes them useless. I have a high-end Onkyo Integra system and reallycan't hear the difference between MiniDisc and CD. MINIDISC PLAYER : I have a car MiniDisc player (4-disc rotary in-dash changer), SONYMDX-400. It has trouble playing recordable MDs, though it will playpre-recorded MD's just fine with no problems. If you don't know whatMiniDisc is, it is VERY similar to CD (the optical sled looks identicalto a CD player's). Biggest difference (besides the obvious) is that MDplayers support pre-recorded MD's which are just like CD's - highlyreflective aluminum layer sandwiched in plastic. Recordable MD's useMagneto Optical technology and are not as reflective. I know that theMD player is able to determine whether the disc is a pre-recorded or MOdisc, either using reflectivity, or perhaps by reading the read-onlyportion of the disc. At any rate, it WILL play my recordable MD's if Iturn the player on its side, or turn it completely upside down. It willplay them without problems that way! Once, I took it apart and cleanedthe laser lens with an alcohol soaked Q-tip, and that fixed it too...for all of one day. Anybody have any ideas? Anyone know how to get into a Test Mode toallow adjustment of laser diode power? I know this can be done on homeMD recorders, but how about car stereos? I'm guessing it's impossibleon this particular stereo because inside I saw a LOT of turnpots on theMD control ckt board! MINIDISC PLAYER : -- Shawn Lin "Here I sit all broken hearted..." Student at Southwest Missouri State University - Springfield MO - - My webpage: Since turning it upside down seems to work, this suggests something marginalwith respect to focus. I suspect the signal to noise ratio for MOs is muchlower than for stamped discs so this behavior is not surprising. If you canlocate the focus offset pot, it might be worth a try - mark position first! I have a car MiniDisc player (4-disc rotary in-dash changer), SONY MDX-400. I bet this thing has a different set of pots for MO.After reading you message, I believe it sounds like the tracking of theread assembly may be just slightly out of alignment, in other words it maybe just off the track a slight bit, and turning it, makes it come intoalignment just enough to make it work.Have you had a chance to try a recorded Mini Disc that someone else hasrecorded? The reason I ask this, is because it may be the recording unitthat is slightly off, and not your car unit. As far as adjustments go, Idon't have any papers on these units, so I can't help you there, but I hopethis gives you a little more to look at.Hey; is this the first ever MD question in this list or what!
