Leon MOV PLAYER : Is there a (faster) alternative to Quicktime which will run on a slow machine (Pentium I 133, 64 MB RAM) to play Quicktime (.mov) files recorded with a digital camera ?-- my girlfriend has a Pentium I with 166 MHz and also only 64 MB RAM withQuicktime4-Runtime installed and it plays my G1 movies smoothly, so I betthe VGA card of your laptop is too slow. In our old Pentium machine we havea Matrox Mystique, which seems to be fast enough to handle the Quicktimevideo codec with 32 bit videos on a Pentium I.I don't think that the 33 MHz difference of the processor makes such a greatdifference, but a "lame" vga card makes a great difference - is it possible,that you have vga card with only 1MB memory? The Mystique has 4MB.Oh, I didn't answer your question so far: No, there's no alternative, causeeven if you use another player, you will need the Quicktime video codec, sothe result will be the same. I think, the only solution would be to reducethe video color depth to 16 bit on another system. That should help on yourold lap-top. MOV PLAYER : Actually the P133 notebook plays VideoCD movies smoothly - even full screen. So I don't understand the problem with Quicktime.The machine has two MB of video memory (16 bit at 1024x768). My girlfriend has an AMD K6 at 400 MHz and even she has problems running 320x240 Quicktime movies smoothly. Quicktime seems to be a drag on resources.I'm using Windows98SE with the 98lite option - turns off the HTML user interface thereby speeding up considerably the machine. This way infrared and USB are available.Well.. the notebook now has a 20GB harddisk and is actually doing fine for all tasks. It even plays VideoCDs smoothly - if I avoid using the Microsoft Media Player. The machine even handles with no problems 4 or 5 MPixel images (for example by using Compupic which is very fast and requires few resources). I'll buy a new computer sooner or later but at the moment there is no compelling need to upgrade. I woudln't upgrade just to be able to view Quicktime movies.
