(MSNBC) By Thomas HeathWashington Post Staff WriterSaturday, January 20, 2001; Page D01 A Charlotte jury acquitted former Carolina Panthers wide receiver RaeCarruth of first-degree murder charges yesterday but convicted him ofthree other felonies, including conspiracy to commit murder, for his rolein the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend.Carruth, 26, escaped a possible death penalty with his acquittal on thefirst-degree murder charge. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison forhis conviction on the murder conspiracy charge in the death of ChericaAdams, 24, who was shot four times while driving her car in southCharlotte in November 1999.The seven-man, five-woman jury also convicted Carruth of shooting into anoccupied vehicle, which carries a maximum 47-month sentence, and using aninstrument to destroy an unborn child, which is punishable by eight to 10months in prison. NFL PLAYER : Carruth was a member of the Panthers at the time of the shooting, but theteam dropped him from their roster when he fled to Tennessee followingAdams's death on Dec. 14, 1999. He had been released on a $3 million bondwhen authorities apprehended him in the trunk of a friend's car in a motelparking lot.Superior Court Judge Charles Lamm dismissed the jurors and scheduled ahearing on Monday, when he will set Carruth's sentence. If the former NFLplayer receives the maximum sentence on the conspiracy charge alone, stateguidelines call for Carruth to serve a minimum 16 years of the 20-yearsentence, according to attorneys.S.
