Tried reinstalling the rp8-setup.exe (about 8 MB) I downloaded when Real Player 8 was first Final. After multiple installs with same error I redownloaded just the player part 4.08 MB and it installs fine and no error when checking for updates. The same thing happened to my Laptop but used the same original file and the new one also worked fine. Just wondering if the original rp8-setup.exe had an error that did not show up until W2KSP1 or W2KSP1 broke the way the original rp8-setup.exe tried to connect to the real player servers. I am still using their 4.1encoder. PLAYER 8 : I recently installed REDHAT LINUX version 7.2 on my computer. It isgreat and I think it is better than Win XP. Recently I down loaded RealPlayer 8, and installed it on my machine to work under linux os. Thereal player gives following error:"Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it."I am running kde desktop on my system, and it player music when itstart. So I know the driver is working. sndconfig detects my soundcard as: VIA technologies IAC97 Audio Controller.Does any one knows how to solve this problem? Has any body ran RealPlayer 8 under REDHAT distribution 7.2. Also when I ran uname -a I getthis massage:Linux Babak_unix 2.4.7-10 #1 Thu Sep 6 16:46:36 EDT 2001 i686 unknownso I assume the kernel version is: 2.4.7-10. Also I tried running/dev/sndstat as root, the os tells me:I had a problem like this on RH 7.2, and I solved it (?) by going intothe KDE Control Center, going to the Sound/Sound Server entry andturning off aRts sound server. PLAYER 8 : I'm not 100% certain that this was the fix that actually worked, but youmight try it.I'm still pretty sure the Arts server is responsible for locking up your sound card. try typing the commandI'm so sure because if your sound driver module was misconfigured, then you definitely wouldn't hear sound on KDE startup. Arts is the KDE sound daemon. Perhaps your attempt to stop the sound daemon failed...but killing it should work.I did that but still does not work! Also, I found out that real playerpreferences include sound card and Audio driver option. In Audio driveroption it has three choise:Use native sound driverEnable support for old OSS drivers (linux only)Esound Supprt(Linux only, ESD must be running (Babak Sehari) wanted comp.os.linux.help to knowabout: (quoted from )Esound is the GNOME equivalent of the artsd sound server used by KDE.You say you have an AC97-based card; if you're lucky it'll be able tohandle multiple streams itself (like the SB Live! can, which uses thesame codec). PLAYER 8 : As a little experiment, in a terminal try the following: (turn your volume down first though, it's quite unpleasant)If that gives an error it might be more helpful than Real Player's.Yes, it is not really a redhat problem per se. Maybe a kernel version.I would try the most recent kernel update.I ran RP8 on 7.2 just fine, including as NS plugin. I bought a newsystem with onboard sound. Now, I get that same message you get, butonly on *some* sites. Some are fine, and some error out. I haven't aclue. I strongly suspect the sound chip is just not well supportedenough....but who knows.I recently installed REDHAT LINUX version 7.2 on my computer. It isgreat and I think it is better than Win XP.
