PLAYER GAMES : I don't think I'm making the distinction, just observing it. Imentioned that most of the recent two-player "German games" are cardgames. That's an objective statement: they don't have a board; what youbuy is a deck of cards. It's less clear what to conclude from that. Iagree it doesn't necessarily say anything about the gameplay of thosegames. It could just be a coincidence (although that seems unlikely). It could be that, for some reason, game companies think that people arewilling to pay less for a two-player game than for a four-player game,so they produce games without boards to keep the cost down. It could bethat they feel that two-player games will be played in a variety ofvenues which don't necessarily have a large flat surface, whilefour-player games are normally played by four players sitting around atable, so boards make more sense in the latter case.I don't really think any of those is the reason. I think it has more todo with what Bob Rossney said: holding a hand full of cards makes it alot easier to conceal information about your position from your opponentthan does placing units or tokens on a board, and two-player games oftendraw on that to inject uncertainty into the game, while multi-playergames have more uncertainty just due to the larger number of independentactors. That certainly doesn't mean that all card games are that way,or that no board games are, but rather just that it's an explanation forwhy two-player games might have a tendency to be card games. PLAYER GAMES : Exactly right, and in the near future, that will be almost everyone. Don't you see? Once you have a good connection, you come to prefermultiplayer games. Most of the indignation over the emphasis onmulti-player games is from people who just haven't seen the light. I'm really surprised at the people in this group who agree withthe editorial. I mean, come on, this is a STRATEGY games newsgroup, and what computer was ever any good at strategy? Do you really prefer your opponents to have be stupid, and have to cheat big-time to provide competition? Even in other genres multi-human games are vastly superiorto human vs. computer games. Action? Once again it's thecomputer being able to do things the human can't (react fast, aim perfectly, whatever) but being stupid. The only genre that will stick around as single-player for awhile is probably adventure. An adventure game (e.g. Myst) islike an interactive novel, and static novels will be around fora while to come. PLAYER GAMES : You have it backwards... people who aren't online naturally wantlots of resources put into single-player gameplay. But give thema chance and some good games, and they will become multi-playergamers. I have been on a T1 (Ethernet) connection for a long time, and I've played the great single player games as well as the greatmulti-player games, and I can hardly get myself to play single-player games anymore. How dull. How sorry. Incidentally, the greatest multi-player games are not commerical(yet). Multi-player games have been around a *long* time onUnix machines, and they have been continually evolving. Thebest multi-player game in the world is either netrek orempire (the real empire, not the commerical Empire), dependingon your taste. For this newsgroup, I would recommend empire(see ). You can play it onany platform now, I think. Same with netrek. Just readrec.games.netrek or rec.games.empire. The editorial merely underlines the great changes going onin the computer world. Is the shift to multi-player gamingoccurring a little too fast? Perhaps. But the change is inevitable, and developers see that, and they want to be on top ofthe wave. PLAYER GAMES : Well, I think they're good fun. But why limit yourself to 2 players ?Multi-player games are even more fun ! (Try XPilot on a unix workstation)Unfortunately, they are a little hard on the arc, since most of us don'thave network cards :-(Still, it isn't all doom and gloom: Wolfenstien (sp?) is supposed to havea 4 player split screen mode, someone claimed to be converting "ScorchedEarth", and of course there's SF3K (see below). We've also got a few2 player games around already (apart from Chocks Away) : Car Wars andMoonquake spring to mind although Car Wars is more fun. Can anyoneelse think of any other (good) multi-player games on the arch ?Isn't the full version of SF3000 supposed to a split screen and a seriallink to allow up to FOUR people to play ? (I seem to remember reading thisthe first time I heard of SF3000 many moons ago).- I'd like to see more games using split screen and/or serial link to give multi player games. Some games (such as Scorched Earth) can get along perfectly well with the players taking turns. PLAYER GAMES : [I accidentally posted this in the action games newsgroup, too.] Hello to everyone who commented on my previous post on the slow deathof single player games. Rather than respond to the best reply, orfollow up to every one, I will attempt to summarize the main pointshere, and my responses. Note that my opinions have been changed abit because of all the responses.First, I definitely should have put a smiley by the paragraph aboutsome people not having "seen the light" of multiplayer games. I guessfor some of you, it *is* a religious issue, and I shouldn't treat yourbeliefs lightly. Apologies to those who were so insulted that theyfelt they needed to attack me personally in their followups or email.I am trying to respond to your on-topic points, if you made any. IfI have missed any or mis-stated the point, by all means correct me. I'd better restate my position here for clarity: multi-human gaminghas the potential to be much more fun than than single-player-onlygames. I think people will gradually realize this over time.
