PLAYER PIANO : Secondly, how do I identify the player mechanism? Then where do you get parts and information (like a "tubing" diagram)?First, I'll tell you I am not a player piano expert. I tune them, andthat's all. For repairs, I refer those to someone else. I don't have thetime or desire to repair player pianos. So, take that into considerationwith what I say here.The first thing, before refinishing the wood, is to call a technician,preferably someone who specializes in player pianos. Have him/herinspect the piano for you. There's a chance the piano is too far gone tomake any repairs worthwhile. Also, I would have this person tune thepiano. You say it's way out of tune. I can tell a lot about a piano justby tuning it. I can tell if any tuning pins are loose, what the actionfeels like, sound, etc. If it won't hold it's tune, chances are it's notworth doing anything to.Assuming the piano can be tuned and the action is workable - then youcan proceed. Remember, a player piano can only work as well as itsaction. You can repair the player part of the piano, but if the actionis junk, or isn't regulated properly, what's the point? PLAYER PIANO : There are a few books for restoring player pianos. Try a search atsomeplace like amazon.com -- search "Rebuilding the Player Piano" --you'll probably end up with books authored by Arthur Reblitz and LarryGivens.Also, what's the climate where you live? Is the garage heated, or is itas cold as outdoors? If it's cold and damp, you'll have rust on thestrings, tuning pins, action parts, player mechanism parts, etc.Now - assuming everything checks out OK - note that refinishing a pianois not the same as refinishing a table. The piano is covered in veneer -so be warned.The name of the player manufacturer should be on the mechanism itself -if you remove the music desk, you should be able to see it.If you tell us the brand of the piano and its serial number, someonehere should be able to let you know when it was made. The serial numbershould be somewhere near the tuning pins - usually a 4-, 5-, or 6-digitnumber. PLAYER PIANO : and gave a lot of good advice. I haven't received the original message here and so don't know the make - but that's very important. Two-thirds of players in the States and half in England were made down to a price and regardless of effort and money will never be better than the fairly poor item they were when new. And it's just amazing how a really good player will open your eyes to the potential of these beasts. However, if you just want something that churns through a song at constant volume, don't let me spoil the pitch.There's a thread on this subject at present on the Mechanical Music Digest (ask at: ). I said a decent restoration job would take 200 hours minimum and another well-known collector said, oh no, they can be patched up for less. Tempus fugit and the materials in those instruments aren't improving, so this gets less true as time goes on. PLAYER PIANO : The usual story, if you're a stayer in these matters, is that you happen across or inherit a dead player, have a huge saga rebuilding it and at the end of that time will have realized through contacts in the player fraternity that ektually, only they didn't want to upset you by saying so at the time, you could have chosen a whole lot better. It's not a bad idea to learn about the field before you start.OK maybe that was an overstatement. It is out of tune enough that I canhere it with my untrained ear (the only thing remotely musical I play isthe stereo). It was tuned about five years ago. I was not there when thefellow did it so I did not ask what he thought about it, but nobody hasever said it is too far gone to tune.Thanks for the advise though, I will try to get that done.As a side note (no pun intended) if I get it tuned now while it is inthe garage, then I do the refinishing and move it back into the livingroom, will I need to have it tuned again?
