PLAYER SOFTWARE : I am running Win2K Professional with SP1, and my video card is an ATI RageFury Pro 32MB which has a hardware DVD decoder. However the ATI supplied DVDPlayer software does not work with Win2k for me, this player softwarecrashes whenever there is a DVD disk in the drive, I mean it runs just fineif the DVD drive has no DVD disk in it but then you won't be able to watchany DVD movie, would you?Anyone knows a good DVD Player software/application for Win2k?I have the same problem/question. Which version of WinDVD are you using& where'd you get it? WinDVD was installed on my Dell when I bought itlast may, but the OS was Win98SE. I've had a miserable time trying tofind DVD software which will run under Win2K, even went so far as to buyMGI's SoftDVD, which says Win2000; but which didn't work.I'm not certain now if I tried WinDVD from the CD's Dell sent me or not.Have to revisit that. I was not happy with WinDVD under Win98SE. I lovedthe version of SoftDVD that was bundled with my Matrox video card, butthat doesn't support W2K either. PLAYER SOFTWARE : I use WinDVD 2000 v2.3 MultiChannel and it has yet to do so much as hiccup -it has been flawless so far. There is a demo, restricted to 5 minutesplayback, but that's enough to know if you're going to have compatibilityproblems. Its SMP and Multimonitor awareness is as good as any I've seen.The only problem with WinDVD is its very slow unless your video card is goodat MPEG decoding. It was very slow on my computer (Athlon 700, 256MB) withmy Voodoo 3, but ran fine on the same computer with a Savage 2000. PowerDVDworked fine on my Voodoo 3 and Savage 2000. My 2 cents.Slow? It is a SOFTWARE decoder! It is as slow as your machine. You wantfaster upgrade or go hardware.for a software player WinDVD from can't be beaten. Iteven manages to hook into the iDTC hardware motion compensation on myAIW128. The ATI MMC won't even install, so you're not alone. Another popularchoice seems to be PowerDVD from Cyberlink, but this won't run on mine. Ihave a dual PIII 600 and while watching a full-screen DVD in WinDVD theprocessors tick over at 20%. Unencrypted DVDs (are rare) use much less CPU.WinDVD also has a 6 channel version if you've got the sound-card for it. PLAYER SOFTWARE : After having played a couple of movies wih Dell 450 I realise the DVD's were runthrough standard microsoft DVD player. I have the Cinemaster hardware card andI'm having trouble with DVD setting. The only language it will play is english.Subtitles can be set but thats just about it. The language (speech) does show avariety of european languages but setting, say Finnish, does nothing. it's stillenglish (I don't mind, but my kids do).The computer came with a slew of CDs and disks but I can find only WDM driversand DVD diagnostincs. These install fine and diagnostics run OK. Where's theplayer? PLAYER SOFTWARE : Re the main issue; - I had already searched my hard drive for the cinemasterplayer (negative) so your suggestion about uninstalling the win98 playerdidn't work for me.However, your message spurred me on to be more tenacious and I have sincedownloaded engqidvd.exe from and installed itand now have the cinemaster player so hopefully this (or the uninstall ofwin98) will work for JKE.OK I found the player software from DELL's site and it installs fine and menus(the menus in the DVD disk which enable language selection) work fine. BUT the QICinemaster player produces noticeable worse video output. The picture is grainierand there is a lot of horizontal disturbance.So I switched back to Microsoft player. It's output is clearly better or am Imissing something here. The Microsoft player seems to be buggy though (I haveWin98). When ever I press the menu button from the playr the DVD menu appears(the one with setup, chapter selection). When I press the setup button the DVDplayer freezes (pressing resume in the player it works again).
