PORTABLE CD PLAYER : Denon comes to my mind immediately. Have you tried their CD player?IMO, there are no real portable audiophile CD players. I'm satisfied withmy Sony Discman, and I take it for what it is, an inexpensive portable, not to be compared with a home player. I think getting really niceheadphones for a portable is a waste, too. Some mid-priced models- SonyMDR-V6, or its successor, maybe Nakamichi? should be sufficient. From: ()Subject: Re: Wanted: High-end Portable CD Player (..oxymoron?) The sonicdifferences among these products--which measured somewhat differently--werelittle to none (at least those who participated in the test could not reliablypinpoint the differences with proper level matching). This doesn't mean thatthe Sony portable could match the other units in terms of feature-set orlong-term reliability. (I can give you long reasons why it won't, because of myless-than-favorable experiences with a an earlier Sony player, the DT-10).

PORTABLE CD PLAYER : But it does go to show that purported sonic differences among CD players thatare performing to manufacturer's spec are slight indeed on music. If you reallywant to hear CD players sound different, just take one with poor low-levellinearity and one with good measurements, match levels, and run a fade to noisetest tone on both. THAT you will hear, even though it doesn't seem to affectthe player's ability to reproduce music terribly much.I've heard a rumor, from an audiophile friend, that the Radio Shack Optimus 3400 CD player, which lists for $180, is excellent. I know it sounds crazy, coming from RS, but they do make those wonderful walnut Minimus 7s. Does anybody know about this piece? From: ()Subject: Re: Wanted: High-end Portable CD Player (..oxymoron?) While not on par with my newlyacquired Quad system in the sound department, it is strong on the practicalside of things. You can get 16 hours of play time from 4 AA's; it's very thinand light; it has electronic shock resistance (i.e., stores 5 seconds of soundin a buffer, and plays from the buffer if you knock the unit). Paid about $330in December at a Good Guys in the SF Bay area.

PORTABLE CD PLAYER : Stereophile had listed the Panasonic SL-NP1A as a recommendedcomponent. It seems that one of their reviewers took a pair ofserious headphones to a store and listened to a whole bunch ofportables to replace one that had died, and was completely taken bythis. It listed at around $129, and he chose it over the much moreexpensive Denon which he was going to get.Since I was in the market for a portable at the time, and didn't havethe time to audition a whole bunch of portables, I went to a localelectronics shop and bought one of their last ones, for under ahundred, without listening to it.It sounds fine; better than a friends Sony. I've never hooked it up tomy main system to compare it to the PS Audio Superlink, but I did likethe way it sounded through my Senheiser headphones. I had planned ongetting a new pair of headphones, too, but my life-plans changed and Ino longer found myself in on public tranportation for 1.5 hrs a day,so the portable gets very little use these days.

PORTABLE CD PLAYER : --/************************************* ************ * *Steven Abrams * **************************************** **********/#include #include I have heard from a friend that the new Radio Shack portable issurprisingly good! He bought one and says it is "astounding" for themoney. Not having listened to it, I can't comment. Try it.I just bought one for my son a few weeks back. It's the only RS modelthat has the digital output jack.I won't comment on sound because I haven't listened to it closely enoughyet, but I will comment on it's line drive stage. Its line stage is severly deficient in drive capability. I tried to useit to drive a 60's vintage receiver line stage and it dragged the CDplayer down so low that it refused to play. No problems though into amore modern pre-amp line stage. The best portabel cd player I heard was a Denon. Of course, I didn'thave the chance to listen to it seriously, but it was still better thanmy Sony.======================================== =================================Darren "Krak" Krakowski | If con- is the opposite of pro-, | | then congress must be the opposite | | of progress.... |======================================= =================================== TO SLIP THE SURLY BONDS...

PORTABLE CD PLAYER : Thanks for the info on recommended components. I'm slowly wadingthrough everything. I got the Stereophile with the recommendedcomponents, and will look for The Absolute Sound's equivalent. After hearing some decent to really good systems while shopping I'vecome to realize that my portable CD player has terrible sound. A bigchunk of the sound comes from the headphones, and I've been thinkingof the Grado SR60's, but I want a recommendation of decent (or better)portable CD player.I recommend you check out the folks at headroom. They sell headphoneamplifiers that really work well. I have their portable amplifier in thetraveler bag and it is an essential part of my airport survival kit. I usethe etymotic earphones with a custom earplug. If I don't feel likelistening to music I put the earplug in anyway for sound control. I feelmuch less fatigued after a flight. They include product recommendations to accompany their headphones. The general problem isnone are pleasing to listen to. Thin bass, shrill highs etc. Justhurtful to the sound quality to the point where you dont even want tolisten to CDs on them. At first I thought the problem was headphones,so I tried a large selection of headphones from cheap to my relativelyexpensive ones I use with my regular component system. After a huntthat has lasted 6 years I have found only one portable CD player that Iactually like to listen to music on, no where near top quality stuff,an ElectroBrand QCD-1000. How I ended up with this portable CD player Iwill never really understand, I bought it on a whim out of frustration. To my amazement the thing actually sounds good, amazingly good. Ratherthan sounding overly tinny or muddy it has full clean bass even throughcheap headphones. Crisp clean highs. For the last 4 years I have beensearching for a decent brand unit that can even match the soundquality. There are downsides to this though. Being cheap it has noanti-skip, it is not the sturdiest unit, though I have taken it apartand it has a rather clean and nicely setup circuit board. I just takeexcellent care of it in hopes it will last long enough for me to findsomething even remotely similar in sound quality to replace it with.Even more amazing I coupled it with a headphone amplifier and qualityheadphones. The sound was purely amazing. I am sitting here listeningto it right now, I still don't believe my ears. I am listening to DireStraits Sultans of Swing, the subtle guitar nuances I can hear in thebackground I would think I was listening to my component system. Ican't really put into words how much I like this thing. I would gladlypay to have it repaired and am actually trying to find a source to buyanother. So yes, portable CD players that sound good are hard to comeby, to the point where some of us are listening to an ElectroBrand.
