PORTABLE DVD PLAYER : -----Otaku tend to be like mules... an evolutionary dead-end, born from otherwisenormal genetic material, which very rarely produces offspring.I dunno, I'd think hard about this one. Depends how much cashyou've got I suppose. A portable DVD is cool, but like most otherportable mini/micro appliance will probably not last as longas a home unit, and it costs way more. As far as image/soundquality, I'm sure it's not as good as a good home unit, but itprobably wouldn't be noticable by most people. What I'vedone on some of my travelling is transfer some anime onto8mm tape and watch it on my camcorder which I was bringingalong anyway.A nice thing I've heard is that the older model Panasonic portableDVD has a region hack for it.Funny that you posted this question since I saw a portableDVD player in the J&R catalog that I thought was really cool.A Sony (PBD-V30) portable player that was bundled with aGlasstron (PLM-A55) Audio/Video headset. Supposedly theheadset creates a 52 inch virtual screen with Hi-Fi Stereo sound.I wear glasses, so I am not sure how well the headset would workfor me and you couldn't have more than one person watch theshow at a time, but you wouldn't be distrubing others either. PORTABLE DVD PLAYER : --Alan D. PetersFor a complete listing of all commercially availableAnime and Manga in English, visit AnimeManiaPurchase thousands of Anime and Live-Action Asian(Japanese, Hong Kong and Mainland China) videos and DVDsI tried out an older version of the Glasstron at an electronics shop about ayear ago. While the headset was a little heavy, especially in the front, itnever interfered with my glasses -- that's because the display unit sitsabout an inch or two *in front of* your face; it never covers your eyescompletely.Still, the Glasstron is quite nice for such a product.A note: Do NOT confuse the PLM-A55 A/V version with the PLM-S700 -- whilethe S700 looks identical to the A55, it is a PC-specific version designedfor use with Sony's VAIO laptops and costs 3 times as much as the A/V-onlyversion, IIRC.[[ This message was both posted and mailed: see the "To," "Cc," and "Newsgroups" headers for details. ]]I picked one up on Ebay for about $800 or so, and have played with it abit. It's a Panasonic DVD L10, Panasonic having the only portables onthe market right now that I know of (with I new model out I belive). Ibought this because a) I have money to waste, and b) I wanted a playerto take overseas so I could show my friend some dvd's. PORTABLE DVD PLAYER : The ONLY reason I can see to have one of these is for the 'cool'factor, and to travel with it to hook up to a real tv. The screen isn'tbad, but is naturaly on the small side :) Subtitles are readable, buttake up more of the screen than they normaly would. Sound from thespeakers is... there. Volume dosen't go that high. Output to a tv andsound system would naturaly be up to a normal dvd players standards.Battery lasts 2hours according to the docs, but I haven't tested ityet. If you want one, your best bet is to go for a used one at auction. Anormal player goes for between $300-600. You'll have to decide how muchextra the screen and size is worth to you. The unit DOES have a fullfunction remote, so it can be used as an everyday player. Why not visit local stores that sell them, and see for yourself whatthey're like? Most DVDs have subtitles on them, so any demo discs theyhave in the store ought to show you how legible they are. Or just takea couple of anime DVDs with you to try out. PORTABLE DVD PLAYER : Just yesterday, I picked up the Sony portable DVD player. After a day ofplaying with it, I have a few thoughts to share.First of all, the video quality is excellent. The player has both compositeconnections (via a headphone-jack-type connecter with three A/V outputs)and S-Video output. With the S-Video output, the picture is clean andsharp, and colors are brilliant. The composite connection is only slightlyworse, with comb filter artifacts showing up in areas of strong colorcontrast. Overall, the colors of the composite connection are also moremuted than the S-Video colors, although the brightness of the gray levelsappears to be turned up. I have no complaints about either connection; onlyby direct comparison does the composite connection suffer. The audio quality is similarly excellent, although the overall volume levelseems to be very low. Let me qualify that statement by saying that I do nothave a Dolby Digital receiver, so I was unable to sample the digitaloptical output; I used the output from the A/V jack exclusively. I wouldassume that the volume from the optical output would be at the referencelevel, but the volume from the A/V jack seemed too low for my amplifier. The levels on the display hardly peaked, even during very loud scenes. OnceI turned the volume up, though, everything sounded correct andwell-balanced, with a good amount of bass in the discs I tested. Oneconcern from the spec sheet: it lists the DVD frequency response as "20 Hzto 44 kHz," which doesn't go as low as the spec for most DVD players I'veseen, which list "2Hz to 44 kHz" as their range. Again, I would assume thatthe Dolby Digital bitstream would not have this low-end limitation. Ifanyone could provide more information on this, it would be appreciated. PORTABLE DVD PLAYER : The disc has most of the features I would ask for, although it lacks someof the amenitites found in other home DVD systems. It has all of the basicplayback and search functionality, but there is no frame advance. It hasforward and backward slow motion, but there is no variable speed. (Also, Ihaven't been able to compare directly, but the still-frame quality doesn'tappear as high as on other players I have seen. It looks like astill-field, not a still-frame.) I probably don't need to discuss all ofthe features that it does contain, so I'll concentrate on the features thatare missing. Notably, the Audio Priority on most Sony DVD players isabsent, requiring the user to manually choose to preferred sound format ifit is not the default set by the disc. This is a minor feature, but onethat would have been nice to have. Also, I have noted the lack of advancedslow-motion and still-frame capabilities, but those might be available byusing a different remote. Other than those, it seems to have all the otherDVD features, including parental lockout, choice of digital output (PCM orDolby Digital), and TV type. If you have specific feature questions, pleaseemail me.
