PORTABLE MP3 PLAYER : [Dons asbestos jacket while finds previous posts on the subject...]* To record music to a MiniDisc, it takes the amount of time the music runsfor. Thus, to record 70mins of MP3s to a Minidisc, it would take you70mins. Your player would have to play the music, skip free, for the entireduration.* Uploading 90mins of MP3s to my Rio takes about 10-15 minutes. (I think. It's certainly less than 90 mins.) When the USB Rio comes out, it will onlytake a couple of minutes.* MP3s are compressed using a lossy routine. So are MiniDiscs. Byrecording an MP3 onto a MiniDisc, you are decompressing and re-compressing.You lose too much quality.* While MiniDiscs can be used independant of a computer for all normalaspects, just like audio tapes, once you add MP3s into the mix you're tyingit to a computer just as much as an MP3 player, except that it's much harderto maintain a MiniDisc library on your PC.In summary, MDs are great if you never want anything to do with MP3s.Mixing MDs and MP3s results in a lot of duplicated work and even some lossin quality. Anyone that's specifically (or even primarily) buying aMiniDisc player to play MP3s is headed in the wrong direction. PORTABLE MP3 PLAYER : Have a look at for some info aboutthe range of portable MP3 devices on the horizon, including aCD-discman-type thing that can play MP3 CDs.well the reason i'd use one is that it is much cheaper in the long run, just buy a load of blank md's at £2 ish for 80min's each. how much would it cost for a compactflash cart for the same amount of time/space (assuming mp3's are encoded at 256kbps)?The best overall MP3 Player is a minidisc recorder. Other thanthe fact that the recording has to be in real time, instead ofvia file transfer from the CPU to the portable MP3 player, a minidiscbeats a portable MP3 player in every other criteria. For example hereare a few differences:Capacity:MP3 player: Capacity is currently 64mbs (Nomad and Rio 500), to use moreyou need to buy a memory card at about $30-100 each, currently the cards have at most 32 extra mbs of memory. The memory ofyou average MP3 player (64mbs) is enough to hold at most 13 5 minutesongs, every time you are tired of these songs, you have to erase themall and re-record again (or use your 32mbs memory card). PORTABLE MP3 PLAYER : Minidisc: Capacity of 74megs per each discette, you can buy as many asyou need to contain your music library. Cost of each is about $2-10(even the $2 ones are of a relatively high quality for your averagerecording). You can change selections just like you change CDs or Tapesin a matter of seconds.Cost:MP3 player: With the players costing around $200, and upgradablememory costingabout $30-100, you shall spend at least a $700 to have a permanentmusic library of about 200 songs.Minidisc: Players start at about $120, and discettes cost about $2each. To have a library of 200 songs you can concievably invest $250Ease of use:MP3 player: With this you have to configure your computer by loadingtheMP3 player software, and installing the USB hardware(or whatever othersystem the MP3 player uses), this takes up computer memory (and time toinstall). Of course you have the usual problems with transferring filesfrom one medium to another, such as failed transfers and the like, plusmost MP3 players are not compatiable with Macs. Furthermore, if notproperly configured, this has the potential to interfere with otherapplications, and will without a doubt tie up computer memory. PORTABLE MP3 PLAYER : Minidisc: Simply connect a stereo double antenna plug to the Computersound out port, and the other end to the Line in on the md and recordthe songs in real time as you play them on your WinAmp or othercomputer mp3 player. This system is very simple, and does not use upany computer memory. Speakers can actually be routed through the MD byconnecting the speaker cable to the line out on the MD.I strongly disagree with that statement on one single point. The MiniDiscrecorders _might_ be the best overall portable _music_ players, but they areby no means even close to the best MP3 player. This is not a small difference. The current parallel port MP3 players canload 90 mins in 15. The USB models will be able to fill up even faster. The MP3 players feed off your computer hard disk, allowing quick mixing ofaudio tracks from a library based on the size of your hard drives. They canalso store far more without having to carry around extra media. The Rio SE& Rio PMP500 can, with the aid of a 32MB card store 90 mins of 128k/s MP3s.No MD player can reach that number. To add insult to injury, the new RCALyra, when combined with the IBM MicroDrive will store around 6 hours of128k MP3s (340MB). PORTABLE MP3 PLAYER : I paid US$350 for my Rio SE + 32MB of RAM. I regularly load a randomselection of music from my hard drive, and irregularly burn a CD off so Ican download some new stuff. A quick search of this hard drive shows 471MP3 tracks. I also have 5 CDs I've burnt at the cost of A$3 each. Imaintain good track were the MP3s are, so I can say that there are 133tracks on Volume 1, 126 on Volume 2, 144 on Volume3, etc.Being able to maintain a library of audio track on a PC allows much greaterflexibility than MDs give you. Hard drive storage is far cheaper per MBthan MDs, and MP3s are smaller. (FYI: MDs hold approx 170MB of data, butthis only stores about 70 mins of music. If MDs played MP3s directly off ofdiscs, perhaps with the use of a data MD drive, then they'd be able to playnearly 3 hours of music.)Hehehe... I just can't resist. Kinda like shoving a stick into a waspnest.
