REAL ONE PLAYER : After my infuriating experiences with Real One from the standpoint ofsigning up and installation, I decided to see what others have been saying.Below are three quotes from people on various newsgroups which I havebrought together thatforms a coherent picture, one that is not pretty.I have have extensively studied best practices of Internet companies, suchas allowing the consumer to opt in, respecting their privacy rights, andgenerally avoiding behavior which is overreaching. Real Networks, in themarketing of their Real One product, seems IMHO to have found away of runningafoul of the spirit of most or all of these core principles. While theirtactics may be techicallylegal, IMHO they will lose lots of customers by skirting on the edge onmarketing that comes very close to being false and misleading. From: Charles Tomaras Subject: Re: RealOne Player DOES have a free downloadNewsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware,micr osoft.public.windowsxp.music, microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers View this article onlyDate: 2001-12-19 15:12:26 PSTGlad to have you partcipating in this newsgroup. How does Real One differfrom Real Player Plus 8? I fear downloading a trial version of a productthat will take all my media file associations and then 14 days later ask mefor $9.95 per month. The Real website is very UNCLEAR as to what products dowhat and what they cost. Real is about to lose those of us who don't wantmonthly subscriptions but don't mind paying a reasonable fee for goodsoftware. Quite frankly though I am a registered and paid up Real customerand have been for a number of years I don't see the advantages over WindowsMedia Player any more. Unless you call the plethora of pop up ads andbanners that come from Real an advantage. I now only use Real Player Pluswhen I have to.Please tell me what you think makes Real Player and Real Onewhatever that is a better product. The Real products seem to become morebloated and cumbersome with each new iteration.

REAL ONE PLAYER : PS I am also a little peeved that Real is happy to take my credit cardinformation over the internet, but when it comes to cancelling the monthlysubscription that we are forced to purchase to download the Real Player plusI recently re-installed RealPlayer on my system, having un-installed it some time back. I did it from a CD I had lying around, wanting only to get the Real codecs back on my system so I could listen to song snippets on sites like amazon.com. I installed it very slowly and carefully, being very sure I unchecked every box concerning their intrusive ways and not giving them permission to do a damn thing except install this version of the player.Imagine my surprise when over the next few days I was treated to a stream of emails stating "Thank you for installing RealPlayer"...and inviting me to subscribe/update/something or other. It's gone again now and it ain't coming back. I can live without the streams that it is necessary to have RealAnything to play.

REAL ONE PLAYER : i'm glad someone brought this up. i installed realplayer from the website(free) and discovered that it has taken over all of my audio files. during theinstall, i was careful to not let it become my default player, but that had noeffect.i think, after reading these, and hopefully more posts, i'll make a decisionthis weekend to get rid of it or not.You mean you are giving some consideration to keeping it??????RealAnything has *always* equaled RealPainInTheAss.I can get along very nicely without a single byte from Real. Now andforever. As CQ so eloquently put:[] [] I recently re-installed RealPlayer on my system, having un-installed it [] some time back. REAL ONE PLAYER : Back when the Tower records streams were all Real media, I emailedthem to tell them that I would be doing my shopping at CDNow, becauseI simply could not keep Real software on my machine. I must not havebeen the only one, because within a few months, they changed to theWMV format. --"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by things you didn't do than by the things you did do." -- Mark TwainRemove X's from my email address above to reply [These opinions are personal views only and only my personal views]Not long ago I added pseudo-streaming sermon and music audio to a churchwebsite. It didn't take long to pick wma over ra even though micro$oft isone of my least favorite marketing companies. It's not that ra is theproblem, it's just what you've mention, those &%$# advertisements and fileassociation grabs! I also picked wma over mp3 because I believe that for agiven bit rate, wma beats mp3 - now don't spam me, you don't have to agreewith that, but I needed to keep my bandwidth as low as possible. Btw, Iwish this was the wma-mp3 newsgroup, not just the mp3 newsgroup.
