There are likely couples in the Seattle area where one works forMicrosoft and the other works for Real Networks!The "older" version of Real Player 8 ("basic") is much more civilized thanthe current "Real One" player (or whatever it is called. It is stillavailble on their web last time I looked (although burried). You just haveto ignore the repeated "your player is out of date" messages. There's still stuff there, tho if you know wherethe options are you can get it down to almost never telling you stuff.As for their encoding and server tools? There are no bugs I know of and I'veused them extensivly. Problem must exist between keyboard and chair.And their media? properly encoded RM8 gives you quality very close to WM8(but the codec was released some 6 months before WM8 made it to the world)at about half the CPU requirements. RM8 conistently thwaps WM8 at modembitrates and their streaming technology is much superier to WM8. WM9(corona) is advertising that it will have the streaming features of RM8 butisn't due for release for ages. E-mail me at and I'll walk you through the process. Basically, yourmedia (.rm) file goes on the server, and so does (i.e., so can) a text filewith the .ram extension. Inside the .ram file, which is a "pointer" file(you can create it in Notebook but give it the .ram extension), you simplyput the complete URL for the .rm file. (I will have to look at my samples tobe 100% sure, but that's what I remember). Then, in your web page, you linkto the .ram file, not to the actual media file. The .ram pointer file"tells" the browser to launch Real Player and the file begins streaming. Ifyou link directly to the .rm media file itself, it tries to download.
