RECORD PLAYER : Don't worry about it. Just know the difference between a "cheap record player"and a "good record player". If it tracks real heavy or uses a ceramiccartridge or steel needle (!! haha) I wouldn't be playing any of -my- vinylrecords on it! However if you want a cheap portable for the beach then you'regoing to get a cheap portable that you can play at the beach. Your best bet isto invest in a boom box and make tapes. I sure as hell wouldn't be bringing myrecords to a beach!!!! (whew! you're quite a character Chris... you alwayscome up with those questions one never expects to hear...)that's what I figured, but thought i'd ask incase there was a big diff. I've learned that the hard way after almost 20 some odd years of screwing withvinylyup, ceramic cartridge and stainless steel needle. as for tracking force, letsjust say i've got a record here that skips with EVERY revolution of the vinylon my normal player, but it plays just fine on this one. but what's thedifference? i went to 9 thrift-shops yesterday and picked up a ton of greatrecords (most of which i already had) to take with me. and since they'rethrift shop, they all sound GREAT and have great covers (i dont buy beat upvinyl) but since i only paid 50-cents each whats the problem with destroyingthem? and besides it sounds purdy neat :0) RECORD PLAYER : a few choice titles include PURPLE RAIN, SHE'S SO UNUSUAL, SHE BOP (DANCE MIXB/W INSTURMENTAL), PRIVATE DANCER (ALBUM), DARE TO BE STUPID and many morecommon-as-dirt 80s gems including some great 45s, all with picture sleeves(MICKEY (the cheer-leader song), WE DONT' NEED ANOTHER HERO, etc). all in allI picked up 30 records all with jackets/pic sleeves.done that before - i hate how tapes sound. and besides, i spent less for arecord player and a ton of records than i would for a boombox and blank tapes, but with a boombox i have to sit down and make all those tapeswhy not? i've been doing it since i was a young'n! :0) my philosophy is eventhough these records are OOP and considered "valuable" to some, why should ilive by their terms? If i can find a "rare" promo record for $0.50 and want tolisten to it while I sun by the shore, why not? besides the kitch is somethingpeople can't resist and I usually end up gathering a small crowd, most asking(and I am serious when I say this), "what is that?" "How does it make music?""Is it a new type of CD?" and my favorite "how does a record work?" :0) RECORD PLAYER : and i'm also bringing my "super mod, man!" 8-track player from the early 70s -i dont know if you've seen it but it's a yellow "Panasonic DyNoMiTe PuMp"player (see for a pic). it looks like a typicalstraight-out-of-the-70s item. that gets even more stares at the beach :0)-----------------I went to 6 stores trying to buy a can of rat hair and animal impurities butevery one I found had tuna fish in it . . .No I doubt it's a ceramic with a steel needle. By steel needle I mean theneedle that is about oh just over 1/4" made of steel that protrudes from thecartridge (or reproducer whatever it may be, found on Victrola-type machinesand such) - however there are old 40's and 50's machines that do have electricpickups for steel needles. If that's what you have you are really, seriously, damaging every record you play on it severely with every play. You can dobetter than that for $5 at a garage sale or Salvation Army...! Do yourself afavor man. RECORD PLAYER : Well, it's your decision really. Personally I never sell records as I onlycollect, and apparently you never sell records because you really tear them up! You can do whatever you wish when it comes right down to it - but every timeyou play a record on a horrid machine it's gonna sound worse and worse withevery play, eventually being useless - and time to make another trip to yourlocal thrift store to replace it.Tapes can sound as good as any record if you use a decent deck to record themon. I think you're more into the nostalgia of playing a record rather than thequality of its reproduction. I mean really, when I think about it now it allseems to come together. Based on countless past posts and even your addedcomment below "and i'm also bringing my "super mod, man!" 8-track player fromthe early 70s" which you can't possibly tell me sounds as good as your records(and if it does, well then there's just no hope) - it really seems that you aremore intrigued with the medium than the quality. Yes, that's definately itafter reading your message once again. RECORD PLAYER : That's fine of course. I adore listening to cylinders on what is and was arelatively cheapo cylinder player in its day (Edison Standard model B circa1906) and it sounds terrible, but I love it. I love listening to 78's on theTurntable: Usually used to denote the separate component that is used to playrecords on a "component" sound system. A turntable has no amplifiers or speakers.Phonograph: A complete "record playing" unit. Usually comprised of a recordchanger, amplifier and speakers.Record Player: A general use term that usually means "phonograph"Turntables are still made today. You can select from dozens of differentmodels. These do NOT have speakers or amplifiers. You must connect them to a component stereo system.Touche my friend. You have a good point. However have you ever seen this as adistinct distinction? You are right about the turntable, it is simply a unitin itself meant to attach to an amplifier. I overlooked that thought. HoweverI've seen 'record player' and 'phonograph' used in the same context, as you'vestated - so I humbly stand corrected...
