TIME PLAYER : and that's not even getting into guys from way back, like shore, norgoalies, which personally i find difficult to compare in any tangiblesense to other players, yet i'd have to think somebody like sawchuk couldeasily make a decent claim to being in the top 5 too. for others, i'd rate bossy above yzerman as well. every few years somebodyruns a web site or informal poll about who is the greatest player of alltime. the top four are almost always those listed above. i've never seenyzerman in that ranking. is that scientific? nah, but it's been doneenough to make me sure that your position yzerman is one of the top fivenhl players of all time is not one shared by most people, and certainlynot by 'knowledgable fans of hockey' (maynardism tm pending).who's gonna stop them next year? detroit is the most obvious culprit.without the emotional motivation of mnetsekov (sp??) and konstantinov, with the (minor) adjustments in chemistry due to replacing players lost toexpansion and the effects of playing the longest ever nhl regular season(plus olympics for some) i think it will not be easy for them. dallasisn't going away either, and i don't expect both new jersey *and* philly(just philly, since clarke is such an ignorant ass) to suck so much nextyear. TIME PLAYER : Not to mention S. O'Neal, if he avoids injuries and plays for 10 years or so. I have to have McHale because of his defensive skills and his virtually unstoppable (if awkward-looking) shots. Forwards seem to be a little thin (which is why I put Robertson here, though that's probably an error), but we don't know for sure until these guys retire. Point well taken, though. And I agree that Malone and Barkley will get serious consideration upon retirement. [Sigh....if only Horace were still with Chicago, he might get a nod by the end of his career; of course, he may win more titles in Orlando, too. Horace Grant fan here :) ] I'd still take Stockton. It's hard to ignore almost 10,000 assists, regardless of when they were made. But the Iceman is a definite possibility.Gervin's a definite possibility I overlooked; thanks for mentioning him. I should have stated this in my post, but I was considering Big O as aLarry Bird called McHale "Mr. Automatic" for that very reason. Hugematch-up problem for almost any other team. Barkeley has said some verycomplimentary things about Kevin too; I believe one comment was to theeffect that McHale was the best forward he ever palyed against (don't askme for a citation to support that hazy memory, though!). TIME PLAYER : I don't post here usually, but I've seen a lot of pro-Jordan andanti-Jordan posts, and I just wanted to toss my humble $.02 in.I think it's pointless to try and determine who the greatest player ofall time is. You could make arguments for many players, and many goodarguments have already been made. If you base it on sheer immensity ofa few stats (scoring, rebounding, shot-blocking), then Chamberlainseems to be the man. If you're like the LA Raiders' Al Davis ("Justwin, baby"), then Russell's 11 rings give him an unmatchable edge. Ifyou look for a do-it-all-night-in-and-night-out kind of player, thenRobertson probably moves to the head of the class. If you're lookingfor a player who serves as an ambassador of the first rank forbasketball and won a few games and honors along the way (and wasprobably better in the ABA than the NBA), then Erving is your man. Forsheer longevity and consistency of achievement, then Abdul-Jabbar mustbe a front-runner. And I haven't named everyone; this is just anexample. TIME PLAYER : See where this is headed? We can't determine who the best player ofall time is, because that does injustice to all the other greats. I ama big, big Jordan fan, but I can't give in to modern myopia and ignoreother legends. Sure, sportswriters nowadays say he's the best, but many of them are(a) too young to know anything about the past other than stat lines andassume they're bloated because the competition is generally bigger andtougher now, or (b) succumbing to a common media phenomenon: as soonas a superlative player comes along, make him the greatest. Perhaps we could discuss the all-time team as being composed of 12players, and not name a starting lineup, because this would run intothe same problems as trying to name an all-time best player. I'll tryone here; feel free to comment (I'm sure there'll be plenty to say):I'd say these three are givens. Any other suggestions for thisposition? TIME PLAYER : Forwards: Oscar Robertson, Julius Erving, Kevin McHale, Larry BirdRobertson is a gimme. Erving gets my nod because of his game and hisclass, not to mention his role in moving the NBA forward. McHale andBird were, with Robert Parish, generally considered the greatestfrontcourt in the history of basketball. I'd say it's fair to put themin with any of the above centers. Of course, I'm overlooking somepeople; toss in some other possibilities.Guards: Bob Cousy, Michael Jordan, John Stockton, Earvin "Magic"Johnson I'd rather pick my 5 best at each position all-time and then pick a teamof 12 from that. If everyone on this thread does that, it should becomeobvious who the best players all-time were. I'll list mine in no particularorder. Guys with an asterisk mean I have em on my all time team. *Wilt Chamberlain, *Bill Russell, *Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Patrick Ewing *Hakeem Alajuwon, Elvin Hayes, Bob Petit, Karl Malone, Connie Hawkins
