TWO PLAYER : I'll state it here. I know people who have spent $2000+ (US bucks)on Magic cards /alone/. Get addicted at your own risk. I personallyabsolutely refuse to borrow money (even at illegally high interest rates)to any person for buying Magic cards. For something the fun of Magic without the $$$-cost, try Up Frontby AH.Actually, I think it's immoral to suggest MtG when the original posterasked for board games.I am a fan of the Empire Builder-type railroad games, and while Ienjoy them as multiplayer games, my husband and I often play them at home. The rules suggest some two-player rules (like removing one of each type ofcommodity chip) but we usually ignore them and play by the standard rules. While having only two players removes some of the more strategic elementsof the games (e.g. locking other players out of a city, picking upcommodities so that other players don't get them), we still have a goodtime. We have all the games, but my favourites are Eurorails (mostinteresting route possibilities) and the new Iron Dragon. TWO PLAYER : Express, Mayfair's rummy-like railroad card game, is also good for two.The rules require you to build one four-car train and one five-car trainto go out, but with two, we've changed it to one four-car, one five-carand one six-car train (otherwise, the game goes too quickly because thereare so many cars available).Titan is an interesting two-player game - once again, the strategy isquite different from the multiplayer version. Because you start out so faraway from your opponent, you have lots of opportunities to build reallypowerful stacks - *then* you go after your opponent. Because each personis only allowed to have 12 stacks, one thing that happens in two-playerTitan is that you run out of stack counters, and have to deliberately getone of your smaller stacks killed to be able to split a more powerfulstack. Another way of playing Titan for two is to play with two colourseach - potentially 24 stacks in all. Each colour plays independently, butyou can pass an "allied" stack without an attack, as if it was your owncolour. TWO PLAYER : A two-player Talisman variant goes as follows (with apologies to theoriginator of the Alignment Wars game at Gen Con): One player is "good"and one player is "evil" - each player gets three characters of thatparticular alignment. Allied characters who land on each other can giveeach other objects, followers, gold, spells, etc. Victory conditions are stillthe same (one member of your "team" has to get to the Crown of Command, etc.)Would be interested in hearing from others who have adapted multiplayergames to two-player formats.--Donna Balkan RR1, Woodlawn, Ontario CANADA K0A 3M0One game I'm familiar with springs to mind which matches yourdescription:Merchant of Venus Players move around an abstract "star map" board. Buy goods one place, sell them someplace else. First player to accumulate a preset sum of money wins. Plays fairly quickly. A fair amount of luck is involved. Anywhere from 2 to 6 players.--Richard Barnette | This space | White's Chappaquidick Theorem:Data General/RTP | intentionally | | left blank | The sooner and in more detail you(919) 248-6225 | | announce the bad news, the better. TWO PLAYER : I really disagree with this, even though I know I am in the completeminority on that. I think two player games are actually pretty good. Youjust need to alter your deck construction and strategy.. Getting andholding the Edge, for example, is a vital part of the game, unlike in a6-player game where you stand almost no chance of ever gaining pool fromthe Edge. Although traditional vote cards (Parity Shift, ConservativeAgitation, KRC) are almost useless, other cards such as Regaining theUpper Hand and Ancilla Empowerment become quite important. True, two-player games lack the politics of multiplayer, but they are muchmore fast and furious, since you are always in on the action. The onlyreal drawback to two player games is the ease of committing Diablerie, because once one Methuselah has the upper hand in votes, he is mercilessin burning your vampires. In multiplayer games, people usually vote yeson a Bloodhunt on general principle (unless, of course, you do some heavyduty dealmaking). TWO PLAYER : I have played many two-player games (as well as many 5-7 player games),and I think that they are both great games. Most of the people I havetalked to who dislike two-player either haven't played that way, or, ifthey did, didn't really design their deck for it. Go ahead, design adeck, and try it, you might like it.I feel two player games are good I have played many and found all of them played quite well. To do this you have to play card restrictions or the game is pretty much redundent.Try a 2 card restiction on vote cards to get rid of exessive voting.2 cards on votes? You might was well ban voting.Actually, 2-player strongly favors rush combat decks, and they have areasonable chance against even a KRC deck. Untap abuses are worse, however.I find 2-player Jyhad very entertaining and one of the better 2-playerCCGs.From: ()Subject: Re: Two player game stinks Newsgroups: Date: 1995/08/16
