VCD PLAYER : Jesus Christ I'm sssssssooooooooooo sick of these"there's no good VCD players for the DC" posts every friggin week!You CAN play VideoCD's in the Dreamcast with EXCELLENTquality playback. I'll just cut and paste from last weeks post:There were THREE "commercial" VCD players that cameout of Hong Kong. The VERY FIRST player was the one thatwas "ripped" and is currently being distributed - some call itthe "xinghong" player. It has no controls, features choppyplayback, and out of sync audio - it is garbage, basically. Ithad a "dongle" unit that plugged into the front of the DC, butthis was also removed for the pirate release. The second playerhad the same software but also came with a remote to controlthe player, still a crap player though. The third and latest VCDplayer for the Dreamcast uses the same remote and "dongle"/IR reciever as the second but features a much, much betterplayer. THIS is the one you want. Because of the dongle, andthe players need for a remote to even function this playerwill most likely NOT be "ripped". Anyway, the playback isfull screen, 30fps with perfectly synced audio. You can play aVCD ( no need to spend hours "re-encoding" ) or even .mpgor .mpeg files that are just on a CD-ROM ( it does have to beformatted mode 2 I believe ). As I said the playback is veryvery good, suprisingly so even. I used my DC VGA box andplayed the same file on my PC ( 800 MHz Athelon, 256 MBRAM ) and on the DC and switched back and forth to compare.Believe it or not IMO the DC player ACTUALLY BESTSWindows Media player - it's the real deal folks. I know VCD,I've burned my own discs way back since the Philips CD-i days,this player is good. To use it you sinply plug in the IR unit andput in the software disc ( It used to come on a CD-R with awhite remote but lately it's a silver remote and a pressed 3 inchsilk-screened software disc ) and boot the DC. After the player boots VCD PLAYER : I am looking for a VCD player for my Playstation. Does anyone even haveone in America? How much are they? What quality is the movies? Is itworth it?Thanx Er... I think you're a bit misinformed. The VCD player for the Playstation, is simply a different type of PSX which also plays VCD's. It is either marketted in Hong Kong or Taiwan, I can't remember right ow - and it's white. It wouldn't be able to play U.S. games though (well, without modification at least) and would likely cost a bit. Probably more than just getting a VCD player to be honest with you. If you already have a PSX then it's really pretty unnecessary. I dunno - I've seen standalone VCD players for about $250 or so (though I'm sure there are ones for less). Then again, for that price you could just about get a Doctor 64 (N64 copier) which has VCD abilities. Then again, if you don't have a Nintendo 64 that wouldn't be of too much use to you. VCD PLAYER : Of course, if you don't have a PSX yet - then getting the white one modded might be on of the coolest things out there. Of course, in Japan they're releasing the all-black (but not the Yarouze) PSX with black controllers as a 5th anniversary model. I saw fliers for it everywhere last December, but I don't know what the purpose of it is. Maybe it also plays VCD's? At any rate, you'd be able to get black controllers and memory cards for it apparently.ACTUALLY, there is a VCD add-on for PSX that came out in Japan. Ibelieve they can be found for around $100-$150. Check out Buy-Ritegames- I know they were carrying them. Are you sure you're not thinking of the MPEG card for the Saturn released in Japan? I suppose one could be made for the PSX, but I saw none in Japan, and this is honestly the first I've heard of it. It seems especially strange since I have heard of PSX's with MPEG (aka VCD) playback capability. VCD PLAYER : Well, you are wrong, because, well, i own one of the units for PSX. : )Just remember, don't buy this unless you can get NTSC VCDs -- PAL VCDswon't exactly be watchable on this thing.The message from (Grey - Digital Target) contains these words: While is may also be true, there also is a VCD "card" that you can add toyour PS that lets you watch VCDs. The name of the device is Gamar'sMovie Card. It's a neat device that connects to the back of your PS. Nointernal modification needed (i.e., you don't have to open your PS up). You just need to attach it to that communications port of your PS and thevideo port. Kinda shaky (not a tight connection) but it works.The thing with this card is that you need to swap your CDs. A spring isprovided; all you need to do is place the spring as directed in the poorlywritten manual. Turn your PS on with a PS original and with the switch onthe module on the "VCD" side (as opposed to the "Game" side) and waitfor swap CD screen to come up. Press button and Viola! It supports VCD 2.0 playback (dunno what that means...) and you can fastforward, rewind, turn into Karaoke mode and display the length of the VCD. VCD PLAYER : Well, enough of the instructions.... Personally, I love this device. The quality of the movies played reallydepends on the quality of the recording the VCD file were made from . Asyou may or may not know, VCD quality isn't exactly all too great. It's alittle fuzzy at times but it's not unusual. Same thing can be seen withall the VCD players I've seen (i.e., a PC w/VCD playback).Anyway, to repeat myself once more, it's not a bad, but not the greatest,but it's a cool device to have. I paid $125 for the module and I got itfrom J&L Video games (). There's a phone numberthere at the site that you can call and it's also listed in their PSProducts page.It may be available at better price somewhere, but after the Snes wentdown, I haven't shopped around too much for prices. Also, I bought thismodule on an impulse along w/ my PS.
