VIDEO PLAYERS : FYI, the Toshiba SD5700 can access both the DVD-Audio and DVD-Video portionsof a DVD-Audio disk. It does require a simple menu change to do thisthough. Sometimes, there is bonus material on the DVD-Video side that isn'tpresent in the DVD-Audio portion.I have compared a few DD and DVD-A tracks. DVD-A is a huge improvement overDD, IMHO. I don't recall having any DVD-Audio disks with DTS tracks. However, I do have some classical recordings in DTS, and I prefer 2-channelstandard CD over DTS for classical. And, I generally prefer (sometimes alot!) DVD-Audio over standard CD.what you hear (i think you mean the signal on the digital output) is **NOT** any DD/DTS signal but the DVD-Audio downmixed (48KHz/20Bit) signal! That's quite a big difference!I can't speak for all DVD-Audio disks, but all of those I have tried inDVD-Video mode (either by forcing my SD5700 to ignore the DVD-Audio portion,or by playing in a DVD-Video only player, like my SD5109), the playback hasbeen 5.1 Dolby Digital.

VIDEO PLAYERS : Perhaps you are referring to playback of DVD-Audio through a digital (andnot 6-channel analog) connection. That would result in a 2-channeldownmixed signal though not necessarily 48KHz/20Bit (if the SD5700 manualcan be believed), but that is certainly one possibility.I just bought a DVD-Audio disk for testing. (I'm considering buying aDVD-Audio capable player such as the Toshiba 4700.) (It said "Playson all DVD players" meaning they included a 5.1 Dolby Digital track inthe DVD-Video domain, which is what I believe they typically plan todo.)I played this on my Sony 7000 straight out the stereo outputs. I havenever heard audio so lacking in definition, depth, etc. FM soundsbetter.I don't exactly fault the 7000, which sounds wonderful on CD's(beating my old top notch CD player from ten years ago easily) andeven more wonderful with 2 channel 24/96 "DAD" (DVD-Video) disks (evenbetter than on another player which supposedly has 24/96 dacs whilethe 7000 only has 20/48 dacs).

VIDEO PLAYERS : Of course, the problem is that the Dolby Digital is a very compressedformat, and perhaps it is even being pro-logic encoded (for theassumed connection to a pro-logic receiver?), or automaticallydownmixed to 2 channel, or ??? Clearly it was not intended forplayback on a good 2 channel system.I'm a big fan of two channel (two GOOD channels as compared to 5 or 6lousy ones, which is all I can afford, let alone find space for, howare you supposed to fit 6 channels in a small bedroom?), and what I'dlike would like are 24/192 stereo DVD-Audio disks, with 24/96 (or, atleast 16/44) tracks in the DVD-Video domain. Unfortunately (for me)it looks like this isn't going to happen much, if at all. So, therewon't be much point in playing DVD-Audio disks on a two channelsystem.I really want this DVD-Audio format to succeed (so I can get a fewgood 24/192 disks, after hearing how good 24/96 is). But, if it'sonly a multichannel vehicle, that will fail. Most hifi systems forthe forseeable future will be two channel. Most people don't eventake very good advantage of two channels (I've seen stereo speakersstacked, put right next to each other in the corner, etc.) How arethose people going to set up a 5.1 system?

VIDEO PLAYERS : I think you were listening to 5.1 Dolby Digital downcast to Dolby Surround. You heard the very worst sound a DVD-Audio disk can produce. I have neverattempted to listen to downcast DD. I'll have to try that for fun some day.And yes, DD uses lossy 12:1 compression. It's OK for movies I guess, butit's not my medium of choice for music by a long shot. Personally, I'lltake a well engineered standard 2-channel CD over DD any day for music. While 24/96 is great for professional recording, I'm skeptical that much ifany difference can be heard between 24/96 and 20/48 in the home. If you arelistening to Chesky 24/96 DVD-Video disks, I agree they do sound very good.I think the Chesky's sound great mostly because of their excellent recordingand mastering techniques. Their 16-bit CD's sound excellent, too.Consider getting the Toshiba SD5700 instead of the SD4700 so you can get theHDCD decoder, too. That way you can play back all those great ReferenceRecoding CD's that are HDCD encoded at their absolute best.

VIDEO PLAYERS : I have a problem that has been frustrating me for over a year now. I justfound this newsgroup, and am hoping I can get some help. For the record, Ihave scanned all of this group's messages on my news-server and read Zach'sFAQ (thx Zach), and this isn't covered.I have very old versions of Windows 95 (4.00.950a) running on a P233/MMX(128M RAM) and on a P166/MMX (32M RAM).With the original version of Media Player that installed off of the4.00.950a CD (sorry I don't recall the WMP version, nor know how to find theversion number in a .CAB file), I was able to watch broadband content fine, achieving a normal framerate of 25 FPS or so, even with the 700 Kilobit persecond streams off of sites like broadcast.com. I was also able to watchbroadband streams using RealPlayer and the Quicktime player. Even infull-screen mode. Then I upgraded the Media Player on the P233 to V6.4, and the framerate forALL streaming video dropped to about 0.05 (no really, about 1 frame everytwo to four seconds). To clarify, it messed up the framerate in Real Playerand QuickTime, not just in WMP. Video files stored on my disk still playedfine, but viewable STREAMING speeds in WMP topped out at 100k, and for Realabout 50k (QT I had to let download the entire file, then play it). Theproblem doesn't relate to window size -- it plays bad even in a 50% windowwhen streaming, and plays fine even full-screen when not streaming -- soit's something going on "behind the scenes".
