WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER : So, at least as far as this situation is concerned, the associations between file extension and application are _not_ overridden by file content. The only way that Dave's friend could have opened Windows Media Player by double-clicking a file labeled as .MP3 is if Dave's friend has Windows Media Player set up as the default application for .MP3 files. Dave bristled at the suggestion that _Dave_ had WMP set as the default MP3 player, and I'm sure that _Dave_ doesn't. Dave's _friend_, on the other hand, does.A whole lot of effort and mistaken beliefs would have been saved if Dave had just said "I don't have WMP set up to play MP3s, but my _friend_, on whose machine this occurred, _does_". Instead, he played the game of "you're not reading my post, so I'm going to tell you you're not reading my post, but I'm not going to correct your misunderstanding". I don't like that game, and this is one of the reasons why - because people pick the wrong thing to assume is at the root of their misunderstanding. Those who want to believe that Microsoft engages in every dangerous practice(*) it can find, will believe that once again, Microsoft has done what it shouldn't do.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER : I am writing for some help. I hope someone can help me. Using Install Shield Express 4.0, I have created a setup that installs a custom program I created using Visual Basic 6 onto users computers. One of the requirements to use my program is that the user must have Microsoft Windows Media Player Series 9. Currently, I tell my users to go to Microsoft's website to download and install the player before they use my program; otherwise, my program won't work properly. Now my question. Is there any way for my setup program to detect whether the user has the Windows Media Player Series 9 already installed on their computer and that is version Series 9? How can this be accomplished?I thought about adding a custom action to run the Microsoft Windows Media Player Series 9 setup but that is unnecessary if the user already has the Windows Media Player Series 9. I just need to install the player if the user doesn't have the player or if the user has thewrong version, such as an earlier version.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER : Another thought is to add a software requirement. However, I would like my program to install followed by installing the player if necessary.Lastly, I noticed another posted message mentioned a merge module, but one for the Windows Media Player Series 9 does not exist. Will the DirectX merge module work in its place? Yeah- is how to detect WMP.WMP doesn't have a default merge module -it'd be a custom action on theinstall. -Z-- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time)See for some helpful WMP info.Following up to your post with the resolution is good netiquette. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. All e-mail to this account will bounce or be deleted - *use the newsgroups*.--"Gary Youn" wrote in message...Thanks for the information. I will check out your suggestions to seeif it will work in my case. I am keeping my fingers crossed.By the way, I like to share what I have done as my solution. However, this solution may not be correct.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER : My Visual Basic 6 standard exe project uses the Windows Media PlayerActiveX control. The file name of the control is aC:\winnt\System32\wmp.dll as viewed by Project | Components. When Icreated the setup file, I would think that InstallShield Express 4.0would include all the necessary files required for the player. Howcan I make sure all the files are included?Currently, I tell my users to download and install from Microsoft'swebsite the Windows Media Player Series 9 if they don't have it inorder to get the necessary files to run my program. It would bebetter to have my setup install all the necessary files in order torun my program that uses the ActiveX Windows Media Player control.By the way, in InstallShield I imported the Visual Basic project whichin turn does a file dependency check using a static scan. I selectedall dependency files to include.I also was looking into trying to add a merge module, but none existsfor the Windows Media Player. Another solution is to do some type oflookup in the registry to check. See below for more details on mysolution, but again that may not be correct.

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER : Here is what I have done in the InstallShield Express 4, but I am notcompletely sure if it is correct or will work correctly. If a user has installed the Windows Media Player Series 9, I check theregistry's hive for this value:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\M ediaPlayer\9.0\Registration]"UDBVer sion"="9.00.00.2980"If this value of 9.00.00.2980 is missing or has a lower number then Iam guessing this tells me the user does not have the version or theplayer installed. I am not exactly sure how earlier versions arewritten to the registry.1: That's not the right reg key. Under- it covers what reg key you want to check. UDBVer is my own private reg keythat nobody but me and AutoUpdate should care about. :)2: You can't redist wmp.dll by itself, you have to redist mpsetup[XP].exe, since that actually installs what is needed. -Z-- (speaking for myself and doing this in my free time)See for some helpful WMP info.Following up to your post with the resolution is good netiquette. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. All e-mail to this account will bounce or be deleted - *use the newsgroups*.--"Gary" wrote in message...
